Large, mostly white raptor that cruises over lakes, rivers, and coastal waterways in search of fish. Impressively widespread: found on every continent except Antarctica. Mostly white head and underparts; dark brown back. In flight, holds wings with a kink in the wrist (shaped like an "M"). Stick nests are conspicuous on top of channel markers, utility poles and high platforms near water. Often seen plunging feet-first into water from high in the air to grab fish.

The weather has been 😐 for a while and the sun sets at around 4pm already... I did not mind the winter darkness until about my mid 30s, but it does dampen my mood now. Photography has therefore taken a back seat – at least until it starts snowing.

So, more summer photos then! I spotted ospreys quite frequently along the coastline from May to August. So frequently, in fact, that they probably had a nest somewhere nearby. I took a lot of photos, but most of them are somewhat bland. I like the first one though.

Heute mal ein #Fischadler in der #Wetterau am #Teufelsee. Der Dank geht raus an den #Graureiher, der ihn an einen sonnigeren Platz vertrieben hat. Die #Kormorane wollten ihn auch nicht auf ihrem Baum. Auf dem Handybild sieht es dann doch ganz schon weit weg aus.

Kalasääksen levotonta lentelyä, kun pesän vierestä menevät veneet ja laivat. The restless flight of an osprey when boats and ships pass by the nest.
Kun Lounaisista metsistä ei tahdo läytyä sopivia pesäpuita, niin suuri ja korkea meriväylän linjamerkkikin käy pesäksi (2. kuva). Siellä yksi pää näkyy, ehkä toinenkin poikanen näkymättömissä, joten risupesä lähellä ihmisasutuksia ja kalansaalistusvesiä ei ole ehkä huono valinta. Jotkut lajit sopeutuvat, toiset eivät.

When there are less and less suitable old nesting trees in the South-West Finnish's forests, a large and tall seaway marker will do for a nest (2nd picture). A head of a chick is visible, perhaps another one is also in the nest. Twig nest situated near people's settlements and fishing waters is perhaps not a bad choice. Some species will adapt, others won't.

Cape May Island Birding by Boat

A spring morning on the saltmarsh, quiet but alive. I joined a small group aboard *The Osprey* for a birding cruise around Cape May Island, camera in hand and eyes open for coastal migrants. It began with a twig and a watchful Osprey, and became a slow, quiet journey into the rhythm of observation.
