Kākāpō

The kākāpō, sometimes known as the owl-parrot, is a large, nocturnal, flightless parrot found in New Zealand. It appears in Māori mythology + was used by the Māori for both its meat + its feathers. Critically endangered - the total known population of as of 2026 is 235. Individuals are named, tagged + confined to four small New Zealand islands, all of which are clear of predators. However, in 2023, a reintroduction to mainland New Zealand (Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari) was accomplished. The sanctuary is surrounded by a pest-exclusion fence.
