Historically spelled as Owensborough, the community today is home to Brescia University, as well as the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art and the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Kentucky Wesleyan College and the World’s Largest Sassafras Tree are also located within the city limits, and Route 60 serves as a bypass along the southern side of the city, furthest from the Ohio River.
