Beginning and Motivation of a Servo Intern in Outreachy

I am Niya (she/her). I am a programmer and a FOSS enthusiast. Servo is a web rendering engine written in Rust. I find Servo exciting, I think Servo is an important project and hopefully by the end of this post you will find Servo exciting too. I will also talk about Outreachy.

It’s been one week since we welcomed the May 2026 Outreachy interns 🎉

We’re excited to see what this cohort will learn, build, and contribute over the next three months.

Outreachy internships are about more than code; they’re about mentorship, inclusion, collaboration, and creating pathways into open source for people historically underrepresented in tech.

To our interns: welcome again, and we’re cheering you on.

Thank you to the mentors and sponsors helping make this journey possible.

Introducing the sponsors supporting the #Outreachy May 2026 cohort!

Open source becomes stronger, more innovative, and more sustainable when opportunity is intentionally created.

The May 2026 Outreachy internship cohort is possible because organizations chose to invest in equitable access to open source mentorship and meaningful contribution pathways for people historically underrepresented in tech.

At a time when building inclusive pathways into technology requires real commitment, these sponsors stepped forward to make that work possible.

We’re proud to recognize the organizations supporting this cohort:

➡️ Promoter Sponsors: #Cisco and @rustfoundation

➡️ Equalizer Sponsor: #BloombergEngineering

➡️Includer Sponsor: The City University of New York #CUNY

➡️ Welcomer: @mozilla and @igalia

Their support does far more than fund internships. It helps create real opportunities for contributors to learn, grow, build confidence, receive mentorship, and make lasting contributions to open source communities around the world.

This kind of investment strengthens not only individual contributors but the future of open source itself, making it more inclusive, resilient, and representative of the people it serves.

To all our sponsors: thank you for helping create pathways where talent can thrive and belonging can grow.

We’re deeply grateful for your partnership in supporting the next generation of open source contributors.

We are already calling for sponsors for the December 2026 internship. Read more: https://www.outreachy.org/sponsor/.

Interested in sponsoring, please reach out to the Outreachy organizers: https://www.outreachy.org/contact/organizers/

I wrote about my first impressions of Fedora as an Outreachy applicant — what surprised me, what I learned, and how I'm getting started with the community.

Would love to hear your thoughts! 😊

What is open source? What is the free software movement?

We make take these ideas for granted, but Fedora Community Architect Justin Wheeler took time to explain what this is all about to our @outreachy applicants. :)

Just published a blog about what it actually feels like to go through the Outreachy application process — the confusion, learning, and small progress along the way.

Still in the middle of it, but learning more than I expected.

I kept hearing about Fedora… so I decided to dig deeper.😀

What I found challenged a few assumptions I had about Linux and open source.

I broke it all down in a short, easy-to-read blog post—perfect if you're exploring tech or just getting started.

Curious to hear your thoughts after you read it.

Fedora, Community, and the Badges Revamp: My Experience

When I first came across the Fedora Project during my initial Outreachy application for the December...

DEV Community

Just completed my first Outreachy 2026 task setting up RamaLama

Here's what I did:
- Installed RamaLama 0.18.0 on macOS
- Pulled models using ollama:// and huggingface:// transports
- Tested Fedora-specific questions
Both models got the answers wrong which is exactly why RAG exists!

RamaLama makes running AI models "boring" in the best way possible.
One command and you're up and running.
