Mountaineers Club helps students find community outdoors

The Mountaineers Club at Ohio State has become one of campus’s largest student organizations, drawing in hundreds of students who give up their weekends for forest trails, hiking and long drives to national parks. Meredith Whistler, a fourth-year in natural resource management and vice president of the club, said they now have around 300 members, […]

Policy Issues

Our Issues These are some of the issues and policy areas where we focus our time and resources to advocate, with a focus on public land access, education, conservation, and safety. All of our advocacy campaigns are possible thanks to the generous support of our members.  Fixing the Recreational Use Statute (CRUS) We led the successful campaign to update the Colorado Recreational Use Statute (CRUS) in 2023 and 2024 to protect public access to Colorado 14ers, trails, and lands. Free the Radical Road!

This historic route up Arthur's Seat was built in 1820 by unemployed "radical" weavers who had threatened insurrection in the face of starvation. It gives amazing views of Edinburgh and Salisbury Crags. It's top of my list in Edinburgh for geology and history. It's been closed for FIVE YEARS over rockfall fears, but Historic Environment Scotland has done nothing to make it safe/open it.

Historic Environment Scotland must reopen the Radical Road

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) unilaterally shut Edinburgh's iconic Radical Road path in Holyrood Park on 11 September 2018 due to concerns about rockfall. Sadly, half a decade later the 200-year-old recorded Right of Way remains shut. Campaigners met on Sunday 3 December 2023 for a public meeting, where it was decided to launch this petition. We want HES to urgently reopen the Radical Road. The Radical Road is one of the most popular ways to walk and run up Arthur's Seat - Edinburgh's top attraction on TripAdvisor - yet it remains blocked and ringed by ugly fencing.

It’s Up to Us is a campaign by Mountaineering Scotland and the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland (OATS) to raise awareness of the desperate need for investment in the repair and maintenance of informal mountain paths to protect the fragile mountain environment and for the safety of path users.
