"Calcium supplements remain among the most frequent dietary supplements on the market. Estimates suggest more than half of senior citizens take these pills on a regular basis. Constant discussion of the dangers of osteoporosis has focused attention on the need for calcium supplements to augment our inadequate intake of calcium containing foods."—wellnowdoctor

"This is the story of how pills for osteopenia ended up in Benghauser's medicine cabinet, and in the medicine cabinets of millions of women like her all over the United States. But more broadly, it's the story of how the definition of what constitutes a disease evolves, and the role that drug companies can play in that evolution."—Alix Spiegel [NPR]

"Are bisphosphonates (fosamax, actonel, boniva) secretly making your bones weaker?

If you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia and are concerned about the long-term effects of bisphosphonate drugs like Fosamax, Actonel, or Boniva, this video is a must-watch.

We dive deep into a groundbreaking scientific study (Ma et al., Scientific Reports) that challenges everything you thought you knew about these common osteoporosis medications and bone density.

Discover the critical difference between bone density (what your DEXA scan shows) and true bone quality and strength. This video uncovers how long-term bisphosphonate use, while potentially increasing density, might actually lead to an accumulation of microcracks and result in more brittle, weaker bones over time – increasing your risk for certain types of fractures."—Ray Hinish, Pharm.D.

The Hidden Truth About Bisphosphonates That Your Doctor Won't Tell You

It’s winter, weather is happening, & my knees hurt.

Don’t get osteoporosis.

If you can’t tolerate a calcium product, try another.

I couldn’t tolerate dairy products (even lactose free). I tried calcium chloride. I figured calcium was not my friend.

After I was dx with osteoporosis at 47, I found calcium citrate.

If you have a medical or dietary condition where you can’t tolerate calcium products, or are otherwise at risk, try other calcium products. Don’t give up.

I’m hoping to be accepted into a study on improving bone density. I hope I get accepted. It’ll include more physical training. #BoneDensity #Osteopenia #Osteoporosis #PostMenopause
Getting my weight-bearing exercise over the past couple of days. #osteopenia

Took a bit of a social media break to process my new diagnoses without venting into the void. And I feel like I'm in a good place where I can accept my new reality easier.
I still have more medical tests and things to hopefully rule out as wrong with me but I feel like the news most impactful to my life has already arrived: #CeliacDisease and #Osteopenia

I have some more grieving to do because life is going to look very different than I thought it would, and I'm sure that going #GlutenFree will be frustrating and alienating for some time yet. But I am also very hopeful. That my broken bones will finally heal and I will feel much better after some time. I am so grateful for food options, for growing awareness, and to have words for what's been happening to me.

Late last week I was told that my blood test came back positive for #CeliacDisease. I was suspicious that something was wrong with my digestive system because of #osteopenia and #osteoporosis being discussed (waiting on tests to confirm) but I never felt wheat intolerance in my guts like I feel lactose intolerance so it really blindsided me to hear the news.

I'm on an emotional roller-coaster. After years of disordered eating and really putting my #anorexia behind me after a decade of recovery and learning to eat intuitively and trust and nourish my body.... here I am. I'm not sure how I proceed from here. It's hard not to feel hopeless when I just conquered #FoodFreedom. I feel like I'm having a new eating disorder pushed onto me and I will have no choice but to comb food labels in fear and refuse for the rest of my life.

I have an endoscopy next month so I'm still supposed to eat #gluten but I feel like the freedom to enjoy my life is on a countdown timer. This just feels so bleak. It's not what I wanted for my future. The bad news just keeps coming.

I wish people understood that it's a terrible idea to assume how someone is recovering from a serious injury or health issue.

I'm so exhausted by people assuming that I'm fully healed from shattering my bones just because I'm walking unaided (except for all the metal in/on my bones ofc). It makes it super awkward because I've found out terrible news about my bone health, my fibula is not healing, and my ankle bones are literally growing together (partially due to bone spurs and rapidly disappearing cartilage). When someone is like, "Oh you're all better, it went by faster than you thought, didn't it?" when they see me for the first time in months it makes me so sad and I have no idea how to respond to an assumption like that when I don't want to tell them my business. Because I will very likely never get "better" at this rate but almost everyone in my life is treating me like I should be fine right now.
