#NativeAmericaCalling: Protecting #SacredSites in urban areas

"Protecting sacred sites in urban areas
Sacred sites sometimes get lost in urban settings as cities prioritize the needs of non-Native residents and commercial interests over the historical and spiritual value for Native Americans.

"But tribes and Native organizations are having some success connecting with city officials to see that sacred spaces are protected and accessible. After years of restoration work, what were known as the #IndianMounds in #SaintPaulMN, have a whole new look, a new #Dakota name — #Wicaḣapi — and an educational #CulturalCenter.

"Over in St. Louis, Missouri, the city just solidified a transfer of property that signifies its first-ever recognition of #TribalSovereignty. The sacred #SugarloafMound is being returned to the care of the #OsageNation, whose people were removed from the land.

"Tune into Native America Calling to talk about the difficult work to recognize and preserve sacred places in population centers."

>>“The Department of the Interior made its intentions clear during the first Trump administration that it was looking for an 'exit ramp' on Indian Affairs. Now, the Department of Government Efficiency has put this into action by making significant cuts to the BIA,” Standing Bear wrote. “It is clear that the BIA will not be around forever, and we must intervene to save the staffing infrastructure; otherwise, the Osage Minerals Estate will lose critical administrative positions.”<<

Finished #KillersoftheFlowerMoon a few days ago. I can see how it's losing to #Oppenheimer in these awards. While it had an interesting story, it just felt all over the place for me. Obviously, the point was to make you revolted by what the #OsageNation endured. But the movie's tone and focus were so uneven that I felt halfway all over--halfway shocked, halfway disgusted, halfway sad. It was even halfway funny to me. Just no forceful, narrative focus. Maybe that was intended. Didn't work for me.
Last night we watched #KillersoftheFlowerMoon and it was both well done and deeply disturbing. From a historical standpoint, I think it is important for people to either see the movie or read the book. #OsageNation #history #HistoryMatters #racism
