I learned this fun way to make a flat color image pop from years of shooting for the subject of this photo, Mr. Mac Estelle. I posited back then that actors had their faces painted light blue to help it register correctly on orthchromatic film. In this photo, I tinted his face WAY blue which darkened it dramatically then desaturated it. Then added some warmth to give it the right amount of tobacco stained age.

And there are still #orthochromatic films like 100 years ago. The red appears very dark here, like black as the film is not sensitive to red light.
Back in the early days of movie making actors actually put blue or green lipstick as a red lipstick would have been a very gothic move ;-)
Panchromatic black and white film came much later.
