Rejoice! For the days of #ornithopters are soon upon us (or at least the Birdy robots from Gundam Seed).

Fast ground-to-air transition with avian-inspired multifunctional legs - Nature

A bird-inspired robot that can jump into flight, walk on the ground and hop over obstacles shows that jumping for take-off is more energy efficient than taking off without the jump.

Nature

#FrankHerbert’s book describes #ornithopters as “any aircraft capable of sustained wing-beat flight in the manner of birds.” For #DunePartOne, director #DenisVilleneuve designed his own spin on the craft and his team built one at 48ft and 75ft long. Each had operable doors and interior cockpit areas for practical filming with the actors. They weighed over 11 tons.

Super fun build! The wingspan is absolutely crazy. Excited for the film next week! 😎

A new episode of my podcast is up. We discuss Lud-in-the-Mist, a Fantasy novel by Hope Mirrlees. http://neversleepsnetwork.com/podcast/s3e77-chapter-seventy-seven-the-golden-apples-of-the-west/

S3E77 -Chapter Seventy-Seven: The Golden Apples of the West!

As we plunge into the history of genre, we're starting to see that the 1920s were a remarkable and important time for fantasy literature, and today's subject, Lud-In-The-Mist by Hope Mirrlees, sits right at the crux of this important paradigm shift. This episode sees a wide-ranging discussion about not just the trends in fantasy in the early 20th century but also folklore and mythology more broadly. A new episode of my podcast is up (or will be. Adam uploaded the wrong audio file, but I'm sure it'll be fixed very soon). This episode, we talk about an authorized prequel to the classic novel Treasure Island, with a wider discussion of pirates in history and popular culture.

S3E76 -Chapter Seventy-Six: The Legend Of Flint's Trove!

In this episode we're hoisting the mizzen mast and swabbing the poop deck to take a look at that staple of adventure stories, the world of piracy--specifically through the lens of Porto Bello Gold, a largely-forgotten pirate novel that happens to be an authorized sequel to the bedrock of pirate fiction, Treasure Island. Turn back now, land lubbers, lest yer ears be assailed by a barrage of salty sea-dog speech... Support us on Patreon and listen to the show a week early!
