Are there any #ornithologists ? I have a dumb question about sparrows (both house sparrow and eurasian tree sparrow).

Near 3 days ago, I saw a lot of sparrows on the streets. Also a lot of them flew to my window to eat some seeds. Despite the air temperature was near 0°C.

But suddenly, after one night all sparrows are disappeared from the streets — I see no one, only another species: crows, wagtails and tits.

First, I thought that all sparrows are migrated somewhere. But from Wikipedia I learned that they may migrate only to nearby rural areas to eat some insects, if there are no food in the city. But (again) in my district are enough bird feeders with food.

So I really have a question — where (and why) are all the sparrows flew?  I live at the outskirts of city with a big count of trees and a small forest nearby, so looks like here should be good conditions for birds

Any #ornithologists know if the "Spangled Drongo" is any relation to the "Bloody Drongo!" my dad used to call me as a kid when I was daydreaming instead of helping him repair an engine?

Any #ornithologists on here?

Fleeting glimpse of small dumpy bird on a tree near a narrow river running through pasture fields near Winchelsea, East Sussex. Merlin App suggests #CettisWarbler but I know apps are not 100%. Confirmation from someone in the know would be great.

Sweden's #MooseMigration Live Stream makes international news! 😄

"It became, in a strange way, gripping because nothing catastrophic is happening, nothing spectacular is happening," she said. "But something very beautiful is happening in that minute-by-minute moment."

I have heard of #Birders (#ornithologists), but... #moose?... What do you call those watching moose, "Moosers," or simply Swedes? 🤷‍♂️

Livestream of moose migrating to their summer pastures fascinates millions

Swedish slow TV hit “The Great Moose Migration” has become a phenomenon. The livestream began airing Tuesday, a week ahead of schedule. National broadcaster SVT shows the annual migration 24 hours a day for 20 days. Not much happens for hours at a time, and fans say that's the beauty of it. The production hit 9 million viewers last year. Remote cameras capture dozens of moose as they swim across a river toward summer grazing pastures. An expert and fan calls the show “gripping because nothing catastrophic is happening.” Even the production crew says their stress eases.

Most #birds #migrate at night, when it’s more difficult to identify them visually and while most birders are in bed. For over a century, acoustic monitoring has hovered tantalizingly out of reach as a method that would solve #ornithologists’ woes...software called BirdVoxDetect, the result of a collaboration between New York University, the #Cornell Lab of #Ornithology, and École Centrale de Nantes, identifies the bird and classifies it to the #species level. https://www.technologyreview.com/2024/12/18/1108423/bird-migration-ai-machine-learning-ecology-research/ #migration
AI is changing how we study bird migration

After decades of frustration, machine-learning tools are unlocking a treasure trove of acoustic data for ecologists.

🎧 The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love by India Holton - Books of My Heart

The Dangerous Damsels series began this world with its witty, hilarious antics.  The Ornithologist’s Field Guide to Love continues the tradition in a new series in the same world, Love’s Academic. It isn’t necessary to have read the previous books as they are not mentioned at all.  Those books are so fun I wouldn’t miss […]

Ornithologists discover world's largest hummingbird is actually two species

The Giant Hummingbird of western South America is not one species but two, according to an international group of researchers. The northern population stays in the high Andes year-round while the southern population migrates from sea level up to 14,000 feet for the nonbreeding months. The two species appear identical. But looks deceive—their genomes and behaviors tell a different story.
