These delicate little flowers belong to Origanum vulgare, better known as wild marjoram or oregano. You’ll often find it blooming in sunny meadows or along field edges, attracting a wide range of bees and butterflies. Its scent is unmistakably herbal, and even though most people know oregano as a kitchen herb, the wild form has just as much charm in the garden—or in the wild.

Deze kleine, tere bloempjes zijn van Origanum vulgare, beter bekend als wilde marjolein of oregano. Je vindt ze vaak in zonnige graslanden of langs akkerranden, waar ze een heleboel bijen en vlinders aantrekken. De geur is onmiskenbaar kruidig, en hoewel de meeste mensen oregano kennen uit de keuken, heeft de wilde vorm minstens evenveel charme – zowel in de tuin als in de natuur.

Wild Oregano (Origanum vulgare, Wilder Dost) is a perennial herb native to Europe and Asia, thriving in sunny meadows, forest edges, and dry grasslands. Ecologically, it is a valuable nectar and pollen source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators from midsummer to autumn, supporting biodiversity when other flowers fade. Its aromatic leaves are widely used as a culinary herb, especially in Mediterranean cuisine, and it also has traditional medicinal uses as an antimicrobial, digestive aid, and anti-inflammatory remedy.
We had plenty of wild oregano in our garden, so I decided to replant it on a steep slope. It’s doing great again in a sunny, dry spot.

Today I spotted a Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) in the garden, resting on wild marjoram (Origanum vulgare)!
It’s one of the first blue butterflies to appear in spring and summer, often seen fluttering around ivy, holly, or buckthorn.
I always love how their shimmering blue wings catch the sunlight.

Vanmiddag een boomblauwtje (Celastrina argiolus) in de tuin gezien, rustend op wilde marjolein (Origanum vulgare)!
Het is een van de eerste blauwtjes die in lente en zomer tevoorschijn komen, vaak te vinden bij klimop, hulst of wegedoorn.
Die flitsende blauwe vleugels in het zonlicht zijn telkens weer een prachtig gezicht.
