#NapoléonBonaparte, looking for a way to boost his reputation, put together a secret expedition to conquer #Egypt & the #Levant, which departed France on #ThisDayInHistory in 1798. He brought along 300 scholars to study the area, launching #MiddleEast studies and #Orientalism.

On the irony of Ashkenazi Jews using "looking European" as a rhetorical weapon against Palestinians [apropos of #Wix's "unlike the Gazans, we look and live like Europeans or Americans,"] meet Esther Schreiber, non-archaeologist with inflated CV and an elaborate cloth headscarf resembling a tea towel (a "tichel")... This one was appointed by Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu to lead the Israel Antiquities Authority. Eliyahu also advanced a bill to create a "Judea and Samaria Heritage Authority" for occupied West Bank, replacing military archaeology officer, with land expropriation powers in Areas A+B+C. Eliyahu said it's "an interim stage until full sovereignty."

Last year we were in Korea, and a few weeks ago in Alsace, France... And what do you get when you’re unexpectedly upgraded to the hotel’s penthouse rooms ? A touch of oriental style !

I think, looking at this photo, that I’m a bit further along in my rehabilitation and can already hold the viewfinder up to my eye !

The smallest camera I own is the Yashica Electro35 MC
https://pixelfed.social/c/814513297743534409

So I’d tested it beforehand to see if I could actually operate it with my left hand.
It was also the first time I’d used colour film in my tiny little Yashica

The lab in #ghent I’ve been using all my life (and get very little credit for) has had its full-frame negative scanner break down. So I’m missing my proof that I don’t crop my photos… sorry about that !!

It’s an unbelievably small and charming little #camera#analog is timeless. #filmphotography #ishootfilm #grainisgood #film #yashicaelectro35 #colorfilm #kodakgold #kodak #hospital #surgery #lefthand #bandage #alsace #france #orientalism #bonsai

Now I'm gonna journal my thoughts on everything I experienced today and what I learned from it like a classical scholar — except I'll write it the way Orientalists wrote about Muslims, but this time about the empire’s own inhabitants, to troll future archaeologists and historians.

"The Petitioner," Osman Hamdi Bey, 19th Century.

Osman Hamdi (1842-1910) was quite a fellow; a museum curator, art expert, archaeologist, writer, and all-around intellectual as well as being an influential painter.

Son of a high-ranking official in the Ottoman Empire, he studied art and art history in Paris, before returning to the Ottoman Empire and serving in various official capacities before being named the director of the Imperial Museum. There he worked to modernize archaeology and prevent the smuggling of artifacts out of the country. And all the time, kept on painting.

His work seems to copy the "orientalism" of European artists, which generates controversy today, as some view it as racist. But his work depicts Ottoman culture and tends to show his subjects (often modeled by family members) in active and intellectual roles. He's now seen as subverting Orientalism for his own purposes.

Medieval Christian tropes inflaming Islamophobic Iran war debate

The war with Iran is not just a geopolitical conflict. We see religious rhetoric used to cast strategic interests as a moral or sacred matter. US House
