Statements such as this reveal a lot about the cultural biases of their authors: „The whole social contract of Dubai involves a wilful blindness to the proximity of suffering and violence. After all, Gaza is geographically close.“ While the first statement is obviously true with regards to the internal tensions of the emirate, the second pertinently isn’t! The geographic distance between Dubai and Gaza is only one hundred kilometres shorter than the distance between Gaza and Rome! Speaking Arabic doesn’t move any two points on the planet’s surface closer to each other.

Expat influencers sold Dubai to the world and were paid to look the other way. Now the dream is crumbling

The Maseratis are borrowed, the helicopters rented by the hour. But deep down Dubai is a lonely place, built by oppressed people

"Instead of seeing authoritarianism as inherently gendered and violent, as an inevitable feature of patriarchy, as a system that justifies itself by co-opting any moral framework, you view it as either “uniquely Islam”, an “Abrahamic religions issue”, or “proof that all religions are oppressive.” Why don’t you name a secular, non-authoritarian, non-misogynistic nation-state, then?"

Orientalism and the Denial of Muslim Political Agency

A critique of Orientalism in Western political frameworks and how it denies Muslim political agency and dehumanises Islamic resistance.

I don't like how fellow Muslims talk about Islam to Western audiences. It's always defensive. Taking the offensive stance once in a while is necessary. Islam doesn't need defending. It's those who paint it as dangerous that need to explain themselves.

Read my critique of Western political frameworks. Consider it a mirror for those who claim to be allies in the West and “anti-imperialist.”
