How's this for a top floor corner window? It's on Burnet and Boston's 1900 Royal Bank building at 140 St Vincent Street in Glasgow

The rear elevation of James Salmon Junior's 1890s Mercantile Chambers on Bothwell Street in Glasgow. Situated in a narrow lane, the projecting columns of oriel windows ensures as much light enters the building as possible.

This oriel window at Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, England was the subject for early attempts to make a photographic negative image on chemically-treated paper between 1835 and 1841 when Henry Fox Talbot announced his paper-based calotype process. Fox Talbot was then unaware of earlier efforts in France by Niépce to capture negative images on chemically-treated pewter, and later by Daguerre on chemically-treated copper. Eventually the negative images would become captured on chemically treated plastic and would become the basis for pre-digital photography.

I love this bat under one of the magnificent oriel windows of the former Glasgow Institite for the Deaf and Dumb on Prospccthill Road. Designed by Salmon, Son and Ritchie, and designed in a stunning French Gothic style, it was built in 1867.

This is a rather wonderful set of oriel windows on a townhouse on Marlborough Avenue in the Broomhill area of Glasgow. They're just enough to break up the otherwise flat facade of the buildings and so draw the eye in.
