Q to the #Homelab community: I've done a #RaspberryPi 4 #NAS before using multiple SSDs, connected to USB and it's worked great. Now I'm planning to set up another RPi4 NAS, but this time using dual 3.5" HDDs - I imagine also connected to USB.

I know 3.5" HDDs are a different beast tho since they require 12V, does anyone know if using a docking station like this by #ORICO would work? I imagine the docking station sorts out the power requirements of the 2x 3.5" HDDs, but I'm wondering if the single USB 3.0 connection to the RPi4 would be fine, or would it 'suffocate' the Pi?

I'm expecting the RPi4 to have 2x USB devices connected to it - one would be the docking station (with 2x 3.5" HDDs), and another USB stick for backups of the microSD card (which is the boot device).

The Orico MetaBox HS200 and MetaBox HS400 are network-attached storage (NAS) devices with aluminum bodies featuring rounded corners. The HS200 supports up to four storage devices (two M.2 SSDs and two hard drives), while the HS400 supports up to seven, thanks to five hard drive bays and two M.2 slots.

The Orico CyberData CF500 I kickstarted came yesterday, so I’ve added some drives. Built in OS requires an app that isn’t completely translated from Chinese, might have some cloud “features”? ZFS is nice though. If I can figure out how, I’ll put Fedora Server on it, I think. #orico #nas #cyberdata
