#SpaceShuttle #Orbiter #Atlantis is backed into the tall #VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building). It will wait there, missing its #RCS (#ReactionControlSystem) and #OMS (#OrbitalManeuveringSystem)
which are being decontaminated at #WhiteSands #Space Harbor from the toxic #MMH monomethylhydrazine /N2O4 that had filled its tanks for so long.

While #launching into #orbit, #NASA’s #Space #Shuttle used its three SSME engines and super-cold LH2 and LOX, but the Shuttle detached from the External Tank once in orbit.
In space, the Shuttle used its two AJ10 engines derived from the Apollo program to alter its orbit, and these smaller #thrusters like the 3 pictured in this #photograph, which allowed the #SpaceShuttle to make small burns to keep itself in the correct orbit or orientation.
