Check out this outrageous NZ harvestman photographed by Sebastian Doak earlier this month near Charleston on the west coast of the South Island.

It's called Algidia viridata ssp. bicolor (yes, another incredible endemic NZ invertebrate still lacking a catchy common name). I've never seen one, but I want to!

The photos on the observation are CC-BY Sebastian Doak.

Me: That better not be a frog.

Kid: it's an #Opiliones. It went up my sleeve.

Me: 🙄 Don't bring those inside. I don't want them to lose legs-

*Kid retrieves Harvestman*

Me: It's a short legged one! :D

Haven't seen this species for a while. So neat! I think it is a species of vonones. A genus of armored harvestmen!🕶️

I wonder why it held its back legs together like in the 2nd photo? Maybe cause it thought it was in a tight space?

#Arachtober 16: mating opilionids, a very leggy affair. I didn't have my light on me and was just using camera flash, and it was over in a second.

Something I only noticed just now: one of the opilionids' legs is curled around the other's! (The tips of the legs are made up of many tiny segments so they are basically prehensile.) This is really cute to me somehow…
