I got mail! So glad to finally have my copy of »Reconfiguring the Portrait«, edited by Abraham Geil and Tomáš Jirsa and published by Edinburgh University Press in its wonderful »Technicities« series. Abe and Tomáš have really put together a remarkable and timely collection of interdisciplinary scholarship on portraiture here – I am very proud to be included with my chapter on »Operative Portraits, or How our Faces became Big Data« and very much looking forward to reading the other contributions!

Quite a while ago, I talked with the wonderful Asko Lehmuskallio about #operativeimages, #facialrecognition and German »Bildwissenschaft« – our conversation is now finally online at Membrana Journal https://www.journals.membrana.org/index.php/membrana/article/view/Meyer-Lehmuskallio-Recognizing-Images-Faces

Just completed this new drawing. The bottom half is a photocopy from the 1934 Manual of Photographic Interpretation. Top half renders a section of that in pixelated coloured pen. Thinking about the transition from Photo Interpretation as skilled labour to machine process and the operative nature of pixel and colour. #OperativeImages #OperativeLandscapes
Die neue #Cargo ist erschienen – u.a. auch mit einer Rezension von mir zu Jussi Parikkas »Operational Images: From the Visual to the Invisual« https://www.cargo-film.de/heft/58/

Now that I've moved to @tldr.nettime, maybe I should rehash my #introduction:
Hi everyone, my name is Roland, I am Berlin-based media and visual culture scholar interested in the history, theory, and aesthetics of #operativeimages. Among other stuff, I have written on the (pre-)history of #facialrecognition & its contemporary implications.
Currently, I am a researcher at the Bochum SFB »Virtual Lifeworlds«, working in a project on virtual #imagearchives. Besides that, am also interested in #imagegeneration, #imageforensics, and #urbansignage.

Here I have 81 slides but they are not vintage photographs. Each hold a digital screenshot. Work in progress ...#postdigital #operativeimages
