RE: https://troet.cafe/@ndaktuell/116662941939378411

From Open Source Software to Open Source Resources?

From Open Source Software to Open Source Resources? ».

Open Source 2.0 : From Open Source Software to Open Source Resources?

What is « open source »? Commonly associated with software whose source code is available under a licence following the « Open Source Definition » (OSD) of the Open Source Initiative (OSI), the definition of open source remains a major source of confusion and conflict. Within software communities the OSD is controversial, and with the democratisation of other openness movements (open science, open education, open hardware, etc.) there is an increasing question regarding open source beyond software for digital resources where source files are provided. The topic of « open source resources » can be essential to enable modifiability of openly available resources in these various domains, greatly enhancing the ability to collaborate. Based on the review of more than 200 documents related to debates and usages of the notion, conducted as independent citizen research, this paper argues for a paradigm shift in the very meaning of « open source ».Preprint v0.1:- PDF and source files available on Zenodo. L'OSI published last year a blog post titled « There are no “Degrees of Open”: why Openness is binary ».

With profound philosophical stance like « And freedom, by its very nature, is binary. ». You're free to work guys?

Article retracted. So there is degree of openness my dear OSD?

There are no “Degrees of Open”: why Openness is binary

For AI to be truly Open Source, it must uphold the same principles that have defined Open Source software for over two decades. There is no “80% open” or “open enough.” The freedom to use, study, modify, and share isn’t negotiable. It’s either there, or it isn’t.

Open Source Initiative

Why and how to do education on open models and digital commons? One key project of this initiative is to build a knowledge base on open models: https://open-models.org

To facilitate the use of this tool the homepage and the introduction have just been updated, by @simon (myself, the author of this publication).

Open models education remains a very emerging topic which is generally conducted in silos: open science to researchers, open software to computer scientists, open education to teachers... Without providing a global picture of these phenomena, these various parties may even be unaware of each other's existence.

The knowledge base tries to answer this gap and connect openness movements. It can have multiple interests, at first because open models share some common laws and because these dynamics are complementary by articulating with each other!

An openly available resource to be able « to train people, a basis to create educational resources adapted to the multiplicity of contexts, a means to empower a network of trainers and specialists and a way to gather research in order to follow the state of the art in these areas. »

Education on open models can be a really broad topic targeting a variety of audiences, the intent with the base is at first to provide a general culture and then redirect to more specialized actors for advanced training.

A way to initiate people to these phenomena and then let them dive deeper depending on their needs.

Whether you're new to these movements or already well-versed in them but want to understand openness in other domains, this resource might be of interest to you. Or for any organization/university/school working around digital literacy!

In this culture of contribution, feedback and suggestions for improvements are appreciated. Open models are hard to explain!

The ongoing transformation of universities and higher education through open models. Article by SPARC Europe : « Connecting the Opens (IV): Institutional strategies to embed openness in Higher Education ».

Link to publication: https://zenodo.org/records/19737561

Some excerpts:

Certain universities are now embedding these priorities within comprehensive institutional strategies. A common direction among institutions is consolidating previously fragmented initiatives into more unified frameworks.

As stated by one leader:“University strategy and new digital learning strategy have brought open research, scholarship and education together. University strategy emphasises community, collaboration and impact.”

Strategic planning in this area often revolves around a set of core dimensions that institutionsare beginning to address in a coordinated way.

These include:
- The development of [open] infrastructures
- The strengthening of skills
- The alignment of reward and recognition systems
- The clarification of roles and responsibilities
- The establishment of governance frameworks and standards, alongside the identification of sustainable funding opportunities.

Collaborative development of open-source software across institutions is also emerging as a more efficient and sustainable model.

5 key actions:
1. Advocate for a holistic and integrated "open by design" approach
2. Champion strategic investment in foundational open infrastructure and support
3. Drive cultural change through incentivization and recognition of open practices
4. Prioritise active engagement and co-creation with students
5. Position the institution as a leader in the global open ecosystem

Others are embedding openness within broader institutional transformations, such as digitalisation or data literacy initiatives, recognising itas a core component of the contemporary university.

Connecting the Opens (IV): Institutional strategies to embed openness in Higher Education

This item is the fourth in a series exploring how university leaders across Europe are connecting open science and open education. Based on interviews conducted by SPARC Europe, the series aims to inspire more leaders to connect the opens and support institutions in addressing complex challenges through an integrated open knowledge framework. This item explores how institutions are turning their vision of openness into concrete strategies to embed it across research and education. It highlights how universities are bringing together open science and open education, aligning governance, incentives and infrastructure, and strengthening collaboration both within institutions and with wider society. It also shows a broader shift from fragmented initiatives to more coordinated, system-wide approaches, where leadership, community engagement and flexible implementation pathways are key to building more connected, participatory and sustainable open knowledge systems.
