I reviewed a 2016 freeware visual novel called The Dandelion Girl (available on Itch.io and Steam), which is based on Robert F. Young's 1961 science fiction short story of the same name. In the review, I noted that the 2016 Dandelion Girl is itself a remake of an earlier version of the novel from 2010. A reader found the original, so I will review that and compare in the next couple of weeks.

Only note on running that I encountered when I first tested it a few months ago is that it wants MIDI for sound. On EndeavourOS that meant setting up Fluidsynth and loading some ALSA kernel modules, but your mileage may vary.

My review of Shooting Star Hill, the official English version of the freeware 2005 Japanese visual novel, Hoshi no Furu Oka. It tells the story of a lonely (alien?) girl and the boy who wants to befriend her. I enjoyed Shooting Star Hill and it is one of the better entries from the review project that I am doing. It takes about one hour to read and remains free to download and run. Linux users should either run the Windows version under WINE or replace the old Linux ONScripter-EN executable that comes with the game with the most recent build (links and instructions in article).

(Note: I should really replace those old screenshots with borderless screenshots... someday.)

Now in the latter stretch of my project to review nearly 30 freeware Japanese visual novels translated in 2005, 2006, and 2008 - I cover Flood of Tears. This is one of the better ones (in my view) thanks to the strong rapport between two of its three main characters. It has distinct Kanon vibes (FOTS was originally published in 2001), but it is an all-ages affair. While it has its flaws, I concur with the translators that it has a great amount of heart -- and it is one of the better al|together VNs of the 18 I have reviewed to date.
