OnePlus Reveals Specifications of its Upcoming Flagship Smartphone

OnePlus has revealed a scant few new details about its upcoming flagship smartphone and despite what the design reveal may have indicated, it looks like the OnePlus 10 Pro will feature what looks to be the same triple camera array as its predecessor.

OnePlus is drip-feeding information about its upcoming new flagship smartphone and what has been released to the press to this point is pretty meager. Yesterday, the company revealed the design of the OnePlus 10 Pro but basically nothing else, leaving interested parties left to question anything beyond the number of cameras, the dual-color flash, and the new matte finish to the back of the device.

On that note, in additional reporting by Input 's Ray Wong, it is apparently made of what OnePlus describes as "micro crystals" that are designed to look like "glittering sand grains."

Some new details on the OnePlus 10 Pro in black:

The rear is made of "micro crystals" that look like "glittering sand grains" and the camera bump on both the black and green is made of ceramic, which is apparently 13 times the fracture toughness of glass<https://t.co/mlCV8djx47> pic.twitter.com/neTaPry5D4

What is PDT 50T?

While the company did not respond to requests from PetaPixel to explain the "PDT 50T" that can be seen in the center of the flash module, Wong did manage to get them to respond. Apparently, the P is supposed to stand for "phone," the 2D stands for "second-generation Hasselblad camera for mobile," and the 50T refers to the 50-megapixel triple rear camera.

As for the “P2D 50T” in the LED flash's center…

OnePlus says the P stands for “phone,” the 2D for “second-generation Hasselblad camera for mobile” and “50T” for the OnePlus 10 Pro’s 50-megapixel triple-lens rear camera.

Umm… okay.

As pretentious as that might sound, it does fall in line with how Hasselblad likes to name its cameras (for example, the X1D-50C or the H6D-400C), so it does make some sense here since OnePlus has partnered with Hasselblad to co-create its smartphone cameras.

OnePlus 10 Pro Specifications

What doesn't make a lot of sense is how OnePlus is referring to the rear camera array as a 50-megapixel triple rear camera because only one of the three is 50-megapixels. According to the specifications sheet that OnePlus is allowing press to share today, the OnePlus 10 Pro will feature a 48, 50, and 8-megapixel triple camera setup. If that sounds familiar, it's because it should: that is the exact same specification as the OnePlus 9 Pro released last year. Well, almost exact; the OnePlus 9 Pro also had a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor which seems to be absent in the 10 Plus.

The front-facing camera is getting a nice resolution bump to 32-megapixels, however. While most photographers will consider it to be the least important of the cameras on a smartphone, it's a solid improvement.

Below are the full specifications the company released today:

The updates seem pretty modest, but considering the main complaint PetaPixel 's Ted Kritsonis had in his review of the OnePlus 9 Pro wasn't the hardware but rather the software, if OnePlus can iron out those kinks and up the ante on the computational front, the OnePlus 10 Pro could still end up being great even with the same cameras.

OnePlus will very likely reveal more information on the OnePlus 10 Pro over the next few days, which will hopefully contain more detail.

The New OnePlus 10 Pro Features Redesigned Hasselblad Camera Array

OnePlus has announced its new flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G. And while details are scarce, the company has at least provided a first look at what to expect from a design perspective.

The design reveal focuses nearly entirely on the backside of the new flagship device and gives a pretty close look at the new camera array that OnePlus cooked up in conjunction with Hasselblad.

OnePlus and Hasselblad

For those who might not know, OnePlus entered a three-year partnership with Hasselblad in March of 2021 in order to “co-develop the next generation of smartphone camera systems.” The first smartphone that came out of this partnership, the OnePlus 9, mainly featured the benefits of Hasselblad's color science, and the cameras on offer as well as the background algorithms felt like they both could use more fine-tuning.

In PetaPixel 's review of the OnePlus 9, Ted Kritsonis wrote that while the cameras were good out of the box, there was somewhat of an “unfinished” feeling about how they performed.

OnePlus will be looking to refine that experience with the OnePlus 10 Pro.

What's New on the OnePlus 10 Pro?

The major details shown in the OnePlus 10 Pro design reveal are the new camera array that is significantly larger than its predecessor, an updated textured backside, and the Snapdragon 8 that powers the smartphone.

The Snapdragon 8 is Qualcomm's latest-generation processor that follows the Snapdragon 888 that was released in 2020. The Snapdragon 8 adds considerable horsepower under the hood for image processing, including the world's first 18-bit image signal processor and is capable of capturing photos and videos from three separate cameras at the same time. It can support a sensor of up to 200-megapixels from a single lens or up to 36-megapixels from all three cameras simultaneously.

It's not clear how OnePlus will leverage all that power, but the new OnePlus 10 Pro does have what looks to be an entirely different set of cameras than were on the OnePlus 9. The designs shown don't provide any clues as to what megapixels, focal lengths, or apertures are to be expected, but the OnPlus 10 Pro looks like it offers three large lenses and sensors to the mix, which is an improvement over what was found in the OnePlus 9. As a refresher, the OnePlus 9 sported a 48-megapixel main camera that used Sony’s 1/1.43-inch IMX789 image sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera featuring Sony’s 1/1.56-inch IMX766 sensor, an 8-megapixel telephoto 3.3x optical zoom, and a 2-megapixel monochrome camera. OnePlus looks like it may have ditched the 2-megapixel monochrome sensor while it focused on making its three other cameras more robust.

Also of note is a large dual-color flash that is visible next to the three cameras that appears able to meter flash color temperature to better match scenes.

The last tidbit of information OnePlus's design reveal shows is a new textured backside to the device, which is in stack contrast to the nearly mirror-finish on the OnePlus 9 that was a pretty bad fingerprint magnet. This new design probably makes that problem a thing of the past. Also shown are two possible colors, and the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G will be available in at least dark green or black. The much larger camera module also blends seamlessly into the side of the phone, which makes for a much sleeker overall aesthetic than the company's previous flagship.

More details on the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G will likely be revealed later this week.
