Maria Branyas Morera, recognized as the world’s oldest person, has passed away at the age of 117, her family shared on social media. Born in the United States, Morera held the title of the world’s oldest living person according to Guinness World Records (GWR), which confirmed her age at 117 years and 168 days. This made her the eighth-oldest person in recorded history.

GWR released a statement detailing that Morera peacefully passed away on Monday at a nursing home in Catalonia, Spain, where she had lived for over 20 years. On Tuesday, her family posted on her X account, stating, “She departed as she wished: peacefully in her sleep, without pain.” 🌙

Shortly before her passing, Morera expressed to her family, “I don’t know when, but this long journey will soon come to an end. I hope death finds me content, free, and smiling, even after such a long life.” 😊

After being named the world’s oldest living person in January 2023 following the death of Sister André at 118, Morera credited her longevity to a life of “order, tranquility, good relationships, and positivity.” She also mentioned the importance of luck 🍀 and genetics.

Born on March 4, 1907, Morera’s life spanned significant historical events, including both World Wars. In her later years, she remained active on social media, managing her X account with the help of her daughter. 📱

The title of the oldest living person now belongs to 116-year-old Tomiko Itooka from Japan. 🇯🇵
