The Italian-Spanish co-production MURDER MANSION (1972). Three people take refuge in a spooky house. There are rumours of vampires and witches. But is this a gothic horror movie or a giallo? It doesn't matter. It's crazy oddball and fun and looks good.

Murder Mansion (1972)

The Murder Mansion ( La mansion de la niebla ) is a 1972 Italian-Spanish co-production directed by a Spaniard, Francisco Lara Polop.  It’s ...

I started and stopped the THE GHOST WALKS (1934) over the course of several nights before making it to the end: my work-weary brain couldn't keep track of all the reversals, reveals, and red herrings. It's the Platonic ideal of Old Dark House movies, with all the requisite elements (secret passageways, portraits with moving eyes, thunderclaps and sudden shrieks). Johnny Arthur is aces as an extremely high-strung theatrical type. #1930s #Movies #Mystery #OldDarkHouse #OldMovies

The Terror, based on a 1938 Edgar Wallace play, owes quite a bit to the Old Dark House genre so popular at the time.

It starts with a daring gold robbery. Later two of the thieves (including the great Alastair Sim) think they've been cheated. Then there's a series of murders at a country house.

A lighthearted mystery romp. Lots of fun.

The Terror (1938)

Few authors have had more films adapted from their work than Edgar Wallace. As late as the 1960s, thirty years after his death, Wallace a...

I have a case of The Mondays (don't you?) and need to lift my spirits with a stodgy Old Dark House movie at the day's close. I've decided: it's gonna be THE BAT WHISPERS (1930), Roland West's sound remake of his earlier THE BAT (1926), both based on the Mary Roberts Rihehart source novel. Chester Morris and Una Merkel have fun, and as with the earlier adaptation, there's plenty of proto-Batman imagery to admire. #1930s #Movies #OldDarkHouse #OldMovies
Tonight's filmic oddity: THE PHANTOM OF CRESTWOOD, a borderline Old Dark House movie from 1932 featuring Ricardo Cortez, Karen Morley, and an unusual gimmick (the solution to the plot's mystery was apparently provided by the winner of a "write our movie's ending!" contest). I probably would have wrapped it all up differently. #1930s #OldDarkHouse #OldMovies

Episode 7: The Cat and the Canary

The Haunted Spouses pounce on the 1927 silent film adaptation of THE CAT AND THE CANARY, discussing its place in the "old dark house" genre, as well as how that genre gives rise to the tropes seen in haunted house stories. They also discuss heeled slippers, potential influences on Scooby Doo, and Laura La Plante's fantastic eyebrow acting.
