The Nats are stuck between a rock and a hard place with their vacuous leader;

They have a deeply unpopular leader who the electorate have got to know very well. A smug, entitled reciter of empty talking points, fairly unlikable and mostly disliked.

But if Nats replace CLuxon with someone whose personality isn't pasted on, it might lift their party's polling, but either Rimmer or Peters could trigger an early election

"We've had 4 or 5 decades... of an economic system that says 'don't worry about concentration of wealth, eventually that will flow down, everyone will be better off', and a lot of people are going, '... that's not what we're experiencing, the cost of living is getting more, we're feeling more marginalised economically, our jobs are less secure', and they want something different"

Kiwis are now paying the price for decisions Luxon and Nicola Willis made long before this crisis started.

"We're going to have a great election campaign, with ACT and NZ First doing all the dirty work, and placeholder PM just kind of being like the default FB picture on everything ... All the billboards going up on the country and there's just him with no absolutely no face, just so people aren't reminded that it is actually Chris Luxon."

A quick Iran update, including the response here in NZ and the pressure developing on Luxon following poor polling and internal leaks. NZ media continues to boosterise failed tech and the Waitangi Tribunal is calling for a halt to curriculum changes.

When Teanau Tuiono said "I sit on the Security and Intelligence Committee" I heard it as 'I sit on the Scary Intelligence Committee'. For a second I thought Parliament had set up a committee for "AI" doomers : P

Maybe a sensible government would be swap the budgets for military defence and Civil Defence at this point? Requiring any defence purchases to be suitable for the latter, since that's what they're going to be used for almost all the time.

In the rare event Aotearoa needs military defence, the armed forces could requisition the gear they need from CD. But natural disasters have killed far more kiwis in the last 100 years than military threats.

Maybe media in Aotearoa would benefit from a cross-party working group on media? One that oversees media regulation covering print, broadcast and digital media, as well as public media, in a holistic and coherent way.

It's role could be to find consensus on media legislation so it doesn't become a political football, subjecting people and organisations working in media to constant, whiplash-inducing changes of policy direction? Eg the future of the #BSA;
