my latest blog post, which feels kinda like a work in progress, but helped me organize some of my ideas about this somewhat cryptic klezmer's mutual aid society.

was looking for traces of the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society on jpress (historical NY mutual aid society for klezmer musicians) and coming up with nothing, but I did keep finding Arbeter Ring Musical Branch 615 ads & coverage in the late 1910s into the 1920s.👀 I don't completely understand its structure, did all A.R. branches also serve as mutual aid societies? Or is it possible this one was just a cultural org.?

looks interesting, I registered. the author is one of the original klezmer revival dudes of the 70s & interviewed a lot of old timers when they were still around.

Book Talk - The Tourist's Guide to Lost Yiddish New York City - American Jewish Historical Society

The Tourist's Guide to Lost Yiddish New York City offers a new look at over a century of Yiddish culture in New York City. Author Henry H. Sapoznik focuses on theater, music, architecture, crime, Black-Jewish cultural interactions, restaurants, real estate, and journalism to tell the history of New York’s Yiddish popular culture from 1880 to the present.

wow, WWI registration cards of old musicians so often bring up interesting tidbits ... a Russian-born member of the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society, Samuel Stromberg (1883–1952), worked at this long-demolished hotel for working women in 1918 (although by then it had been converted into a normal hotel).

In Millerton, you find the Irondale Schoolhouse next to the trail. Note the 48 stars on the flag—before Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to the union. The building itself dates to the 1850’s.

While going through my list of NY #klezmer names this week, I've been looking into the Axelrod family of musicians who were from Zolochiv and came to NYC around 1906.They mostly became members of the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society which was a mutual aid society for klezmorim and other Jewish immigrant musicians in NY. Still trying to sort out how some seem to have moved a second time to Detroit and Chicago fairly early on.

Bit by bit I've been going through many of the things I've scanned and photographed during my research trip to NYC this past winter, and adding the names and context of musicians to my database, and figuring out who they were by looking in old newspapers and genealogy type records. Here's an interesting one that only appeared in one archival source (Philip Juvelier, c.1883–1956) made more curious by another ad I'll share in a later post.

the same NYC.gov link above has some cool historic photos from c.1905, so a bit more than a decade before Nazer was employed there. great interior.
