In "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E. T. A. Hoffmann, the Mouse King goes to war against a human king and queen after they exterminate most of his family. The Mouse King's seven heads is a reference to real "rat kings" - groups of rats or mice whose tails have become permanently entwined together.
