March diving recap is complete! Not very productive photographically overall, but I did get the fisheye underwater here in New England, which was fun.

My March Underwater

🚀 Photographer of the sea and sky, occasionally the land.

solarpoweredseaslug #Elysiaviridis is a nudibranch that can ingest intact chloroplasts from the algae on which it feeds and use them in its own body to photosynthesise. #cornwall #sealife #nudibranchs
I'll never get tired of white-lined dirona #nudibranchs 🥰 (Dirona albolineata). Now that Hood Canal is entering its summer state of algael blooms in mid-water, they're a bit harder to find and photos have more backscatter. This beauty from last weekend, 30m or so. #underwaterphotography #macrophotography #scuba
Diving in #newquay bay yesterday. Thinking Amphorina Farrani, the #nudibranchs are slowly appearing on the northern coast of #cornwall. This was tricky to photo, digging into the small animal turf. Ocean temperature knocking around the 12-13 degree mark but feeling a bit more summery. #oceanlife #freedive #snorkeling
Back Underwater 🤿🦀

First dives in almost 6 months since it's been so cold! It was still cold but this was part of my drysuit course. Not the most exciting dives, but saw enough and happy to be back in the water!

Because of the later entry, I knew the sun was going to be at a great angle for shooting wide angle, but I couldn't have predicted the incredible viz. We had as much viz as we could ask for and we swam over the edge, down the slope and then pretty much stayed there. The nudis were EVERYWHERE. Piles of C. verrucosa scattered between all sizes and colors of F. verrillis. My buddy pointed me to a giant Dendronotus frondosus, which was great to see for the first time in awhile. I didn't end up pulling my strobes far enough back for virtually any of my shots, but I was able to edit some nice ones. The water was very chilly, but the mild air temps and glow from an awesome dive warmed us up quickly.

Gauguin? Matisse? Miró? Well, actually, it’s… sea slug! 🤗 A team at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids & Interfaces discovered that #nudibranchs - a type of marine slug often called 'the #butterflies of the #sea' - produce their brilliant hues not with pigment chemistry as previously thought, but through structural colouration, arranged in pixel-like patterns.🦋🐚🎨.🌊 More: https://www.mpg.de/26287823/impressionist-sea-slugs [Credit: Samuel Humphrey/MPI of Colloids and Interfaces]

Peirce Island in New Hampshire was positively overflowing with nudibranchs last week. This image was captured with my Olympus OM-1 and Olympus 8mm fisheye lens to really show off the abundance of hydroids (nudi food!) and great visibility. This image features a pair of Flabellina verrilli that were each around 4 inches long. It was a beautiful day in the chilly water!
