#nucleosynthesis

Nuclear fission has been observed for the first time in a cosmic setting. Evidence from stellar observations links neutron star mergers to superheavy element formation that then breaks apart, seeding galaxies with lighter heavy elements.

#KnowledgeByte: After the #BigBang, the #Universe was incredibly hot and dense, a soup of fundamental particles like quarks and gluons. As the universe expanded and cooled, these particles combined to form protons and neutrons.

These, in turn, fused to create the nuclei of the lightest elements, mainly hydrogen and helium, during a process called #Nucleosynthesis.

How Early Could Life Have Emerged in the Universe?

New simulations suggest that habitable worlds could have begun forming only 200 million years after the big bang

Unexpected shape of lead-208 nucleus prompts reevaluation of atomic nuclei models

An international research collaboration led by the University of Surrey's Nuclear Physics Group has overturned the long-standing belief that the atomic nucleus of lead-208 (²⁰⁸Pb) is perfectly spherical. The discovery challenges fundamental assumptions about nuclear structure and has far-reaching implications for our understanding of how the heaviest elements are formed in the universe.

Working on my next #linocut for #printersolstice2425 - last week we talked about how some numbers of nucleons (neutrons and protons) are ā€œmagicā€ so sometimes if you add another the binding energy is lower than the last, so the resulting nuclei are more common and stable. This week is about how you do that…. How you add nucleons to nuclei and grow heavier elements.

Anyone recognize this #astrophysicist ?

#KnowledgeByte: #Gold is believed to have originated in space through #Supernova #Nucleosynthesis, which occurs when a star implodes. The violent explosion of a supernova forms gold and other heavy elements, which are then flung out across space.

Gold is also formed in the Earth's crust through hydrothermal processes, which occur when hot fluids move through rocks and deposit minerals.

Origin of Gold

Gold is thought to have been produced in supernova nucleosynthesis, and from the collision of neutron stars, and to have been present in the dust from which the Solar System formed.

Knowledge Zone

Did you know? Only 1% of the gold on Earth has ever been mined! The rest (a whopping 99%) is buried thousands of miles down.
