Natty James hat-trick carries North Texas SC to dominant home win over SKC II - 3rd Degree

I watched some of the VHS tapes from Poppy Playtime and noticed something odd:

While Playtime corp seems to be located in North America where the NTSC colour standard was used with a frame rate of 59.94 half-frames per second, the humming of the audio track in a lot of the VHS tapes suggests that the recordings were made with a frame rate of 50 half-frames per second, typical for recordings in TV norms that use the PAL or SECAM colour standards which were common in Europe and other places in the world. Playtime corp would have to import PAL/SECAM VCRs and TVs (and probably provide a 230V 50Hz power supply) which would most likely result in higher prices compared to buying regular NTSC video equipment.

3rd Degree the Podcast #362

This week on 3rd Degree the Podcast, it's a triple win podcast!! Your hosts - Peter Welpton, Dan Crooke, and Buzz Carrick - have three DFW wins to talk about! First, it's FC Dallas with a second straight strong performance in the new flex 4, this time over Real Salt Lake in Frisco. FCD shut down RSL and Luna, Santi Moreno got his first goal. Kaick (who was amazing) got the second. And after some brain poo, Sam Sarver put it to bed. What a showing. Dallas Trinity took care of business in Tampa with Sealy Strawn leading the way. Captain Wisner was the standout in midfield again. She's got one home game left in a stellar career. Catch her before she's gone!  And North Texas SC got a road win up in Minnesota. Newman and Nys got on the score sheet as the little Burn continue with the 4-4-2 as well. An Ospina red card leaves a hole in the midfield for next weekend.  Music by Pappy Check.

And yes, CRTs are much older than HDDs, although the late-model CRTs in the 1990s and 2000s were a lot like HDDs: an incredibly advanced and precise version of a very old and simple idea.

You wouldn't expect to see a razor-sharp 2048×1536p picture on the same sort of tube that's best known for the very color-wobbly 480i in your living room, but as it turns out, the humble #CRT had far more potential than #NTSC gave it credit for.

3rd Degree the Podcast #360

This week on 3rd Degree the Podcast, your hosts - Peter Welpton, Dan Crooke, and Buzz Carrick - have to deal with a bunch of losers. FC Dallas were losers (twice), North Texas SC were losers, and Dallas Trinity were losers... nope check that, sorry, Trinity tied... but in a playoff race, a tie might as well be a loss.  The struggle was real for FC Dallas vs Minnesota, why exactly was that? Then the team rotated a ton at Seattle Sounders, not a bad idea since FCD has won there once in its entire existence and that was 15 years ago.  Thankfully there are couple positives from the both games, here and there. But this is what this team is. Up next are the MetroStars...opps, Red Bulls.  North Texas SC continues to struggle without the FCD pieces: Caleb Swann, Ricky Louis, and Nick Simmonds. Edu Nys is a baller though. Biggar and Starnes are holding it down in the back.  And Dallas Trinity again struggeled at Brooklyn, although at least they got a point this time in the porring rain. Three games left, it's going to be tough. Music by Pappy Check.

@stylus

PAL stands for Phase Alternation Line, and it basically mucks around with the phase of the colour subcarrier to prevent drift. So random noise on an unused broadcast channel is as unlikely to be recognizable as a colour burst in #PAL as it is with #NTSC.

Amusingly, it didn't usually have entire blocks of blank lines, either. I suspect that the stock art that @codinginquarantine used here was not based upon broadcast noise, but upon video-tape noise, likely when watching in fast forward/rewind.

Noise re-modulated through a video tape player's RF analogue output had a different quality.

And of course the fake noise used in 21st century movies and telly programmes about the 20th century, dummied up by a computer, is usually wrong. It's one of those widespread telly errors, like the view through #binoculars having two circles centred far apart.

Tag, @bytebro. You're it.
