CW: mention of Nazis killing people in WWII
A couple of weeks ago NPR Music (which I love and subscribe to) had a bonus episode for paid subscribers discussing The Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop. It was a good episode... except that they dodged discussion of any of the political implications of the song's lyrics. They had a "Ramones sang about political topics" take, but otherwise their approach to the song's content was that it represented teenagers lining up to see punk bands or something like that.
It's not just "bop," it's Blitzkrieg bop. Yes, there's content about kids lining up and getting in cars, but... the damn chorus:
Hey ho, let's go
Shoot 'em in the back now
What they want, I don't know
They're all revved up and ready to go
I don't think they're singing about shooting music fans who are waiting in line for shows. I hear early Brownshirt bullshit, if mixed with observations about music fans. It's not just the chorus, either: The kids piling into cars and lining up are arguably ambiguous references, too. Before the SS became a serious thing the Brownshirts rounded up Jews (and other "undesirables") and piled them into cars and trucks, lined them up in the forest, and literally shot them in the back, to be buried in mass graves. This practice would later evolve into the production line mass murder of the concentration camps.
The Ramones were perhaps politically ambiguous (one of them was famously right-wing), but they definitely sang about political issues, sometimes with incisive lyrics (e.g., The KKK Took My Baby Away, about a Black woman being abducted in North Carolina).
@nprmusic does not usually dodge politics so completely. They pussyfoot around them a bit, which I think I understand, but this seemed odd.
Lest anyone have illusions about my motivations: listen to NPR Music podcasts. They are awesome. This little thing, which I think is an oversight, should not dissuade you.

"Amaia: Tiny Desk Concert".
It is a delightful performance, and Amaia is a very talented musician.
Made me look her up in my music app. I am playing her 2019 album "Pero No Pasa Nada".
