Other Hannibal films have been very clean, polished and artful. This feels gritty and messy. There's less movement and vibrance and it relies on you to study each slow and methodical scene for what it is. Seeing the layers and layers of care that went into crafting it. While Anthony Hopkins and Mads Mikkelsen played Hannibal as charming, polite and a little quirky - Brian Cox feels less like a character and more like a genuine person.
