The Black Gate entrance once housed a drawbridge & portcullis

BTW, the name derives not from the building's colour (obviously!), but a prominent merchant who leased apartments there in the 1600s.

When the area was neglected, the Black Gate & the Castle were divided by a Victorian railway viaduct (carrying the east coast main line). This is the view from under its arches https://www.flickr.com/photos/woolamaloo_gazette/55073112395/in/photostream/lightbox/

To be fair, at that period the area was a slum and the old fortifications left to rack and ruin.

Be prepared for a *lot* of steep flights of stone steps, especially if you intend to wind your way through the levels to the roof of the keep (very tiring but amazing views, sadly not good if you have mobility problems though - Medieval builers didn't factor that in)
