Outside the Jugendstilsenteret (the Art Nouveau Center) in Ålesund, Norway, this trash bin is made decidedly un-trashy by all the museum stickers shedded by visitors. Not me though, I put things like that in my scrapbook. Stickers, not trash cans.

My favourite building in all the world, Såheim power plant in Rjukan, Norway. Designed by Thorvald Astrup and Olaf Nordhagen, it begun working in 1916. This tiny detail from the mammoth power station can't convey the greatness of this beautiful art nouveau industrial plant with its asymmetrical beauty and its countless details that are there for aesthetic purposes only. They don't make'm like this anymore.

Contemporary art by Irja Čiekča-Schmidt, inspired by traditional noaidi drums, which were also on display at the first-rate world heritage museum at Røros last summer. The drums on display were fascinating, but the most mind-boggling thing was the fact that 1950's researchers made their own interpretation of the symbols on the drums even though the shamans themselves had provided explanations.
Anyway, Røros is such a delightful and amazing place in every way. Situated close to present-day Norwegian/Swedish border, it was subject to constant conflicts and wars, just like that whole mining country. Sometimes it would be Danish and the Swedes came to grab it, sometimes it was the other way round, just like in big parts of today's Sweden. Let's hope today's borders will hold -- the Danish ones not least. (I'm painfully aware that Sapmi borders have been atrociously disrespected for centuries.)
