Met daarbij als tweede belangrijke stuk Variations on A Melancholy Theme. Het was de meesterlijke opening van de vier dagen Mehldau die ons te wachten staan. […]

Natalie Merchant, Keep Your Courage, 2023 on Nonesuch

Merchant’s first collection of new work since 2014’s self-titled album – in between she did some releases of new versions of existing songs.

I love everything Natalie Merchant touches – she’s a great singer, songwriter, performer, and all around human. A model for the independent artist who keeps her ability to do what she wants

My copy—direct from Barnes & Noble—is the “B&N Exclusive” version on transparent gold vinyl. (These are available from other retailers outside the US, but exclusive in the US).

Ended Monday and welcomed Tuesday after m swim with Japanese Koto Classics by Shinichi Yuize, released on Nonesuch in 1966.

This contemplative solo set features Shinichi Yuize, known internationally as both a virtuoso koto player and a composer. He traces the history of one of the world's oldest instruments through these five compositions, performing haunting vocals on two of them.

The koto averages about six feet in length and ten inches in width, and has 13 strings of equal thickness made of wound, starched silk. There is one small bridge for each string. The strings are struck with three ivory picks, which are attached to the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the player’s right hand. The date of the introduction into Japan of the koto (perhaps one of the oldest musical instruments of the world) is not quite certain... - Nonesuch

Come What May is a studio album by an American jazz quartet led by Joshua Redman. The album was recorded as a quartet and released on March 29, 2019 by Nonesuch Records.

Matthew Kassel of JazzTimes noted "Joshua Redman’s excellent new album marks a homecoming of sorts... If anything, the quartet now sounds wiser and more self-assured. Featured here are seven original compositions by Redman, a straight-ahead collection of runic melodies ranging in style from jam-like funk to medium swing to soulful balladry." - Wikipedia
