John Cook, Canadian Presbyterian, on dangers of both poverty and riches. The hardness of extreme poverty gives little time for extensive devotions, may make one angry at God.

MODERN religiosity prescribes a devotional life only practical for the wealthy retiree. And ungodliness of the poor is a reason, not to help but to round them up.

How can you neglect neither meditation on God’s word, nor the alleviation of extreme poverty?

John Chrysostom, archbishop of Constantinople, speaks of riches. He says injustice is `inherently tied to great wealth, and asks reader to trace it back to the Garden, where God never instituted anyone wealthier than others.

I won’t allow myself a second of snobbery at Chrysostom’s misunderstanding of economics until I have an hour to share in his indignation at the scandal of poverty.
