Off to new shores

Now that I dropped Pure Blog from the list of projects to pursue as it is too limited for my purpose, I started to have a closer look at Hugo for a blog on webspace I own.

Perhaps with something like Pages CMS on top of a Git-/repository-based workflow - for convenience.

But I would prefer to have some non-US non-profit alternative for GitHub. And Codeberg (Forgejo) e.g. is exactly that.

There are options.

But I am grateful for more proposals how to bring this to life.

Hugo with Codeberg and BunnyCDN

While enshittification is rolling across a lot of US-based services, let’s try to host our static Hugo page with EU-based services only. Domain, deployment, CDN: we’re going back to the roots - or into a more modern tech-era for European internet services.

The Cloud and AI Development Act 'should embed a sovereignty provision that curtails the current “sovereignty-washing” practiced by US hyperscalers in partnership with European firms. Here, sovereignty means fostering genuine competence and capacity inside the Union, rather than relying on complex legal tricks that depend on foreign-controlled technology.'

Europe Can’t Defend Democracy on US Servers

As long as 80 percent of European digital products and services originate in the United States, blackmail will thrive, writes Alexandra Geese.

"The European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud" aims to foster the development and deployment of next generation edge and cloud technologies." The Alliance brings together businesses, Member States representatives and experts. "The work of the Alliance is facilitated by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology #DGConnect."

A new thematic roadmap was released on 8 July 2025. This 68-page document proposes and details an action plan to position open source software as a pillar of the Union's strategy for strengthening its technological autonomy vis-à-vis non-European players.

The report starts by noting Europe's dependence in the cloud, edge and IoT sectors, and proposes 70 actions to try to remedy the situation. The most significant measures include:
• the introduction of a public procurement policy that systematically favours European open source solutions,
• the creation of a dedicated funding vehicle for critical projects,
• the application of open interoperability standards to counter vendor lock-in.

Alexandre Roure of the Computer & Communications Industry Association, whose members include many Big Tech groups, says the debate about blunt market access restrictions for non-EU tech companies “only distracts policymakers from the real task: finally delivering a functioning digital single market with clear, simple and practical rules”.

In private conversations, several Big Tech lobbyists and executives also express confidence in their ability to continue dominating the European market given the paucity of homegrown alternatives and the lack of urgency among many consumers.

Cloud migration converts universities “from being a source of technical innovation and knowledge distribution to consumers of services”—a fundamental shift that undermines academic independence and transforms knowledge-producing institutions into service-consuming clients.
