Nodding Wild Onion (Allium cernuum). This onion is edible: both the bulbs and the leaves which I use in the same way as chives. Throwing some of the leaves on an open fire also repels mosquitoes.
In the Algonquian languages this plant was called "shikaakwa" or "shikaqua".
The French later changed this to Chicagou, giving rise to the place name of Chicago, where this plant once grew in abundance.
