Noctilucent Windmill

A midsummer shot from a night when there was a beautiful display of noctilucent clouds. I love it when these fleeting shapes of ice crystals, high up in the atmosphere, suddenly appear some time after sunset.

Soon, a few photography friends and I will be presenting each other our best shots of the past year. And with selecting your best shots, comes the dismissal of the ones you really like, but ultimately don't make the cut. I will be sharing those shots here, in chronological order. Shot of NLC’s from the balcony. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen a display of Noctilucent Clouds to the North. For those unfamiliar with these clouds, Noctilucent Clouds (NLCs) are rare, high-altitude clouds that glow a ghostly blue or silver after sunset. They form in the mesosphere in the coldest part of Earth’s atmosphere, at extreme altitudes of around 76 to 85 km (47 to 53 miles) above the surface, making them the highest clouds in our atmosphere. #NoctilucentClouds #yyc #Calgary
