I knew where to find a function, I had a good guess as to what caused most of the bugs when they arose, and usually knew where to start looking. That code was mine, because I had put time and energy into it. That made it far more maintainable, because I was so familiar with it. Because I had spent so much time with it.
If I had vibe-coded all of it, I wouldn't know a thing about it. I wouldn't know where to find anything. I wouldn't know where the examples of how to use something were. I wouldn't know where to start looking when bugs arose. I wouldn't know how to explain it to my other team members when they asked “Sky, what is this otherworldly horror you've coded up now?”
Maybe, maybe generative AI can save time at first, but you're losing time in the long run when no one knows what it's doing, not even the person that committed it.
