#NoBot #NoIndex #NoBridge

This post is a test of a custom rule for Cloudflare I've been working on, and of my own conspiracy theory.

Forgive me my tinfoil hat: I have long suspected that the use of these tags (above), in fact, results in attracting more attention from crawlers/spiders/bots/whatever; that said automated systems exist which are specifically instructed to look for these tags, and to index any and all pages in which they find them.

If and only if my custom rule blocks a notably higher number of attempts to index this post alone, as compared to any of my other posts individually, I assume my theory is true until otherwise proven.

I will provide an update about this whenever I have one.

@Maker_of_Things @Janet_52square @suearcher Yes, I'm blocking all of those as well, often their entire instances (since they're usually instances dedicated for these data harvesting bots).

The last one I blocked just this week even had "we respect #nobot tag in your profile!" blurb on their instance page, BUT THEY DIDN'T.

In news that surprises nobody, someone who created an app to feed your toots into slop machines was not only unaware of how consent works, they've also never thought what the #NoBot tag on profiles is for, and was completely unaware of the "no index" flag that people can set in their Mastodon settings.

@Doctor0710 @mcc Does the #nobot force compliance or is it like robots.txt which gets routinely ignored?

This is an interesting issue that we need to address. If a fediverse client implements AI summarization and wholescale sends an entire timeline to an AI, who takes responsibility for that? This is not the first project to do this. The AI certainly isn't respecting `no index` or `#nobot`

@jdrm al menos parece que aceptó respetar el #nobot del perfil

@mcc there's a "quiet public" visibility option which should hide the post from unauthorised clients, maybe that should be the default, with a warning on the public visibility for posting

Edit: Read through the replies, and found out about the #nobot tag, I just added that to my thing to filter out too. I wasn't aware of that.

@cthos @mcc

Yeah, this prompted me to add #nobot to my profile, which is something I wasn't aware of. It will be interesting to see if he honors that. I'm sure we will hear more about this.

I think I may start setting most of my posts to followers only and have them auto destruct because of garbage like this.

@mcc I just blocked him immediately but someone else with more patience than I have may have convinced him to *at least* respect the #nobot profile convention but I ... am not convinced that he will actually do this.

Starlink is already exempt from the FCC router ban. Imagine that...
