NASA Built An Unbreakable Tire...

Ooh… a #Nitinol experiment. Remember the dodgy explanation by #Buehler🪄✨discovering✨ the magic properties of Nitinol after three years of hard work through a random demonstration?

#Nitinol, an alloy of nickel and titanium, makes a rubber-acting metal that can bend all different ways, and it will always stretch back to its original shape. #Bridgestone is using a felt-like material for its tread, while the wheel comprises thin metal spokes that can flex https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czrve1zrlg3o
@SRLevine @ascentale #BikeNite A6: Yes, the #METL #Nitinol SMART tire (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/smarttirecompany/space-age-bicycle-wheels-using-nasa-technology) is the second thing which inspired me to that question.
I would have backed the project on #Kickstarter, but none of their so far offered tire sizes fits any of my bicycles as they only offer 28" and 8.5". Most of my bikes have 20" (Bromptons) or 20" and 26" tires (IIRC all my recumbents have that combo).
So my plan is to wait until they also offer less common tire sizes.
Did you know that a dark-grey nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape-memory alloy known as nitinol was an integral part of the secret USAF work into understanding the Roswell foil in July 1947?
An interesting Veritasium video about NASA working on making tires using the shape memory effect of Nickel titanium (Nitinol).
Beside Mars rovers, they might be used to create non-pneumatic tires for bicycles, cars and planes.

NASA have made a wheel capable of withstanding tough Martian terrain, but just how indestructible is it? Head to https://hensonshaving.com/veritasium and ent...
How a #metal with a memory will shape our future on #Mars
#Nitinol, a “memory” metal that can remember its original shape when heated, is an industrial gem that will play a key role in #NASA’s next mission to Mars.
