TIL: #nitinol based heat engines
Generating Motion Via Nitinol Wires

Generally, when we’re looking to build something that moves we reach for motors, servos, or steppers — which ultimately are all just variations on the same concept. But there are other …

@SRLevine @ascentale #BikeNite A6: Yes, the #METL #Nitinol SMART tire (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/smarttirecompany/space-age-bicycle-wheels-using-nasa-technology) is the second thing which inspired me to that question.

I would have backed the project on #Kickstarter, but none of their so far offered tire sizes fits any of my bicycles as they only offer 28" and 8.5". Most of my bikes have 20" (Bromptons) or 20" and 26" tires (IIRC all my recumbents have that combo).

So my plan is to wait until they also offer less common tire sizes.

Nitinol Is A Material We Need To Be Playing With More

Another Kickstarter, another opportunity for people to get mad at delayed and poorly functioning (if delivered at all) gadgets. But the real star of the show here is NiTinol, a shape metal alloy co…

Roswell Revealed: The New Scientific Breakthrough into the Controversial UFO Crash of 1947 (U.S. English / Update 2016) (Paperback)

Did you know that a dark-grey nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape-memory alloy known as nitinol was an integral part of the secret USAF work into understanding the Roswell foil in July 1947?

An interesting Veritasium video about NASA working on making tires using the shape memory effect of Nickel titanium (Nitinol).

Beside Mars rovers, they might be used to create non-pneumatic tires for bicycles, cars and planes.
