This time, we visited JD Sports and SNIPES during Black Friday Weekend because they mainly sell Nike and Adidas products.
Both Nike and Adidas encourage the fast fashion industry, an industry that wants people to buy more and more and more clothes without giving a damn about our planet.
Every year, people buy an average of 47 new items of clothing. This accounts for 8-10% of total CO2 emissions, and 10,000 liters of water are needed to produce 1 kilogram of clothing. The average person throws away 17.7 kilograms of clothing every year, which ends up in landfills full of clothing in countries such as Chile and Ghana. This clothing is burned, releasing many chemicals and microplastics. In other words, the people in the global South are victims of our urge to buy more clothes.
In order to sell clothing as cheaply as possible, clothing production is accompanied by many human rights violations. The people who make the clothes work extremely long hours, under dangerous conditions, and are often paid very little, a.k.a. modern slavery... In China, it is mainly the Uyghurs who make the clothes as forced labor in the Uyghur concentration camps.
And if that's not enough reason not to buy new shoes from JD Sports and SNIPES, they also don't care much about animal rights. Leather, wool, sheepskins, down, and skins from exotic animals are all used for your new shoes.
That's why we're asking you to boycott Black Friday and boycott stores that sell Nike and Adidas.
