🇬🇧 The field that changed exoplanets.

Kepler was a 0.95m space telescope launched in 2009 to detect exoplanets passing in front of their stars. The main scientific goal of the mission was to detect Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars, and measure how common they are. To achieve this, Kepler observed a fixed field at the border between the Cygnus and the Lyra constellation for nearly four years.

This field of view is roughtly 11°x11°, that's about the size of your palm with your arm stretched in front of you. 🤚🏻
Kepler used 42 CCD sensors to measure the brightness of the stars in this region of the sky, respresented as white squares.

Kepler observed approximately 150 000 stars and detected 2 783 confirmed exoplanets, with 1 979 candidates yet to be confirmed.

Small planets are remarkably common: approximately 50% of Sun-like stars host at least one planet smaller than 4 Earth-radii.

The picture was taken from the top of Mont Fort, in the Swiss Alps, at 3300m of altitude.

Germer Iluminando
~~~~~
Wouldn't you love to have one of these in your house? It's an old Germer stove, a beautiful work of art. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the interior of the stove as well as the exterior from camera right. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting." Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. This was photographed while Tim Little and I were teaching a night photography workshop at Nelson Ghost Town in Nevada and Goffs, CA, along Route 66.
Who went to summer camp as a kid? This stretch car must have taken many there. To create this night photo, I placed the camera on a tripod. Then I lit the scene with a handheld flashlight while the camera shutter was open for a long time. This is called "light painting." It's more fun than AI-generated images. Shadows Where the Vines Once Grew
~~~~~
A farmhouse with vines near a mining camp, with stars in the night sky streaking overhead. And yes, a moon. Mojave Desert near a grove of beautiful Joshua Trees. I took this photo on a beautiful, calm desert night, the kind where you only hear the occasional breeze, the echoing of a distant coyote, and the gentle rustling of leaves in the cool evening air. I sometimes wonder if I do night photography in lieu of therapy. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. Thanks for looking.

Bridge Over Troubled Garden
~~~~~
Exploring the Devil's Garden in the thick of night. Metate Arch, Staircase-Escalante, Utah. . This photo shows the celestial movements of the stars over 30 minutes. I love how a single image can show the long passage of time in a way that we cannot perceive when we are there. Devil's Garden involved a 12-mile drive down a dirt road from Escalante. A beautiful moonlit night, I had the whole night to wander in peace and create. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld LED flashlight, and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting." Why? And Then There Was Crimson
~~~~~
Hey, here's a photo from one of my night photography safaris! This is a vintage Ford Model A that I stumbled upon on my travels. I used a handheld light to illuminate the car and capture its mysterious aura during this long exposure photo. I used some warm white light, but the darkness and strange red light on the headlights and windshield lend an extra touch of intrigue and mystery. I hope you like it. There was a High Wind Advisory this particular evening. While I went to talk to someone for a minute, a gust of wind over 45 mph blew over my Nikon D750. It's not really night photography unless you have some of these mishaps, I suppose. I chose to photograph indoors for a while with my other camera.
