Apparently this was the “first truly gay horror fantasy epic”. I’m not sure I picked up any of that back in 1990. I just knew that after Hellraiser we all loved Clive Barker and were a bit disappointed by this follow-up. There’s plenty written about it in retrospect if you’re so inclined.

JoBlo has a great video about Nightbreed, Nightbreed: The Movie the Studio Tried to Destroy

The Director's Cut is the one to watch. It follows the novella "Cabal" almost exactly and the villain (spoiler, I guess) is played by David Cronenberg. They don't go quite as deeply into the Doctor's relationship with his mask. It's much deeper and creepier in the novella.

After that, see if you can find a copy of the out-of-print "Midian Unmade: Tales of Clive Barker's Nightbreed". It includes multiple authors' takes on Midian and the Nightbreed after the events of the movie. There are two ISBNs listed for it 1466823623, 9781466823624

Of, if you want an official canon, see if you can find the "Clive Barker's Nightbreed" comics or graphic novels.

On this day in 1990, Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED hit theaters—a dark fantasy masterpiece celebrating the beauty of monsters and outsiders. #Nightbreed #CliveBarker
#film #horror

I may have read it once before when I was way younger but that was 30 years ago.

Anyway, I do really love the movie "Nightbreed".

You could tell Clive Barker made the movie because so much of the book was carried directly over to the screen, the kind of things a director not intimately entwined with the source material would have cut or changed.
I was astonished at how much of the book I knew just because of the movie.

Anyway, it's a tragic tale about "monsters" just trying to live their lives (unlive their unlives? die their deaths?) and humans fucking it all up (like we do).

If you know Clive Barker, you know he's a gay man who is always combining the erotic with gore and horror. Just look at the Cenobites.

This novella had two ridiculous sex scenes that made me say something like "Oh come on!" -- I can't remember what. But both times, my wife looked over at me from her recliner to mine and I just shook my head and said "Clive Barker".

It's not quite "bounced boobily" but it made me think of that.

Picture the scene.
Your name is Lori.
You love a man named Boone. He's mentally ill and you are the only one who has stuck with him while he tries to get help.
He disappears.
His therapist calls you and tells you that "sorry, Boone is actually a serial killer who has killed at least 11 people".
Then you find out Boone was spotted and murdered by police in a forgotten town in the middle of nowhere.

What's your first reaction?
Is it, "I have to see where they gunned down the man I love?"
Well, that's what she does.

You also picks up a new friend on the way, Sheryl.
Y'all find the forgotten town.
Y'all find the abandoned house in which he was killed.
She sees the blood, Boone's blood. She sees the wood splintered by bullets, the police tape.
He died here.
Also, there's a gothic cemetery on the edge of town which you immediately want to explore until Sheryl convinces you it's getting late and you need to find a place for the night.
Y'all drive back to a nearby dying, but not yet dead, town and stay at a single room hotel (two twin beds).
Sheryl goes out on the town for some reason even though this place is certainly not bustling.
You stay behind, exhausted.
The room next door is having a loud party with raucous music.
You take a long, luxurious bath.
You sit naked on the edge of your bed and...

She sat on the edge of the bed and ran her palms back and forth over her breasts, enjoying their smoothness.

Then you lie down on the top of your bed, not even pulling back the blanket. You can smell stale cigarette smoke baked into the fabric.
The music next door has calmed down into "couples only" type music.
Obviously your first thought is to furiously masturbate.
Sheryl could come back at any moment.
Keep masturbating.
After "rising and falling, rising and falling" with "no peak" until you are "running with sweat and gorged on sensation."
Then you throw off the covers and crawl under the sheet, still naked and sweaty, falling quickly asleep.

Her reaction was: "I was just at the remote murder scene of the serial killer I loved and all I got was seriously horny."

I mean, maybe they are made for each other? I don't know.

The other scene is far more graphic and makes even less sense, but this is enough for a Monday morning.
I mean, who hasn't fantasized about being boned by a shadow tentacle monster.

Alternatively, I could just be sexually frustrated (I am) and jealous of anyone having a good time like that.
