A final 4 of my #TheWinter10 which again are mainly garden escapes. Hebe (with a bee!), Mexican Fleabane, Periwinkle and a garden Cranesbill hybrid. #Dawlish #Devon #TheWinter10 #NewYearPlantHunt #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography
Three plants that grow on the sea cliffs at Dawlish. Sour Fig (the new name for a plant that used to have a racial slur in its name), Osteospermum and Seaside Daisy. All garden escapes. #Dawlish #Devon #TheWinter10 #NewYearPlantHunt #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography
More of my #TheWinter10 from the #NewYearPlantHunt - Trailing Bellflower and Adria Bellflower, the two common bellflowers of old walls in UK towns. #Dawlish #Devon #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography
I exceeded #TheWinter10 by a long way on Friday while doing the #NewYearPlantHunt around Dawlish on the #Devon coast. 23 species in flower despite the cold weather, although a lot of those were garden escapes. The highlight was Rue, which isn't grown much in gardens so is extremely rare as a pavement plant. But there it was in full flower in a pavement beside a roadside flower bed.

Had planned another #NewYearPlantHunt today, but cold weather, residual snow and the need to recuperate from Thursday have nixed it.

Two days of sub-zero temperatures will zap quite a few flowers too.

Despite doing some long recces, I found my actual #NewYearPlantHunt tough going. Saw 66 species in flower (around 6 fairly marginal) and failed to get to 2 others (Ivy & Small Nettle) in the allotted 3 hours. Also missed Tansy seen a few days earlier.

First plant of the day : abundant Winter.Heliotrope by Geography, University Park. Last plant: Smooth Hawksbeard.
