The York Daily 11-16-1877 Is it a Spook? For a week or more past, a man appeared to be hovering about in the rear of residences on north Duke street, in the neighborhood of Farquhar's Agricultural Works. He has been shot at, throwed at and grabbed at-but that was all. Ten days ago he was first seen.

The Bottstown Spook that has been troubling the citizens of that vicinity for some days, which was several times briefly noticed in recent issues of the Daily and which even was alluded to in a sermon on Sunday by one of our town ministers, has turned out we are informed to be an owl.

The York Gazette 12-03-1879
The "spook" story, which was represented to have occurred near this place, as lately published in different papers in this county, is exploded like all such stories. The "spook" in this case proved to be a drunken Irish woman.

Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt

Almost 50 years ago, the term FUD (short for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) was coined. IBM used FUD to convince technology buyers to use their products rather than those of other tech companies because, "Well, you know and trust IBM, right? You haven't heard of this other company before." They wanted customers to be uncertain and doubtful that the new company would make a good prod

"She Had an Affair with Her Bicycle Instructor Because Her Husband Snored"

The divorce of Samuel Freligh (b.1852 NY) and his wife Mary Miller was salacious enough to warrant several newspaper articles in 1900 NY City.

It seems that Mary was accused of having an affair with a "Bicycle Instructor," and was tired of her husband's loud snoring. When the Judge gave his ruling on the case, daughter Ida (who had sided with her mother during the proceedings) began to yell in protest and had to be removed from the courtroom.

Daughter Ida later became a #Burlesque actress in the theatre.
