So at work I've found yet another way #NewOutlook fails.

Notepad++ Copy as RTF. Paste into New Outlook, absolutely nothing happens.

So sharing properly formatted and highlighted code snips in New Outlook is just way too fancy for New Outlook.

Everyday New Outlook fails me at least three times on something. Everyday I curse every single person who ever worked on this weapon of mass destruction disguised as software. I must invent languages to curse them in because I have long since exhausted the curses known to all the currently pre-existing languages on this planet.

I don't think I can ever hate New Outlook because that attempts to summarize the full spectrum of outrage and fury I have with New Outlook every 57 µs, into a single word which is just simply over simplifying those emotions to the point of not fully conveying anything that represents the truth.

Saying the center of an active volcano is "hot" just fails to explain the entire phenomenon. So too would saying just simply, "I hate New Outlook" fail spectacularly to indicate how I honestly feel about the product.

Calling New Outlook an email client is absolutely the hubris of mankind manifest.

I have been using Outlook for literal decades. Microsoft has managed to botch #NewOutlook so bad, that I'm now at the stage of not trusting it will do anything I want it to. I canceled a meeting series last week. It's back. I canceled it again today, and now folks are somehow ACCEPTING the cancellation? 30% AI code, indeed. Make it make sense! (This is at work, I have no choice)

Holy shit #Windows11. I'm not sure what's worse. The fact that it just decided I was no longer authenticated with my Entra account any more but didn't bother telling me, the fact that a consequence of this was the Outlook (#NewOutlook, less functionality, even more dogshit!) was no longer pulling down emails (and again, no warning of this, at least Old Oulook would tell you when it wasn't synching), or the fact that when I finally got a notification (from #OneDrive a couple of hours after this seems to have started), I can't sign back in, I get generic "eat a dick, not working" errors and so when I try and reboot my device, it's just sitting on "Restarting" for over five minutes now.

I realise I sound like a grumpy old man, but christ I miss Windows XP.

I'm pretty sure I've indicated my hatred for "New" Outlook. I've absolutely made it known to the place I work at.

But just so folks know. It really sucks. Like, few things enrage me more than clicking on the icon that will inevitably open this godforsaken application. Just double clicking on the icon on my desktop and I can feel the weight of a hundred SCRUM meetings press against my chest.

And that anxiety comes from not what awaits me when I open New Outlook. It comes from me having to deal with New Outlook. It's like in the sea of things I need to worry about, I've got a first mate on my boat who happens to also be a really bored arsonist. And our boat is made of wood and carrying gasoline as our cargo. And for some reason the company's contract for our journey includes handing a box of strike on box matches to the first mate. I just want to make the delivery and I feel like everyone's conspiring against me. Especially New Outlook.

But I think what gets me the most is this, especially in these trying times of DDR5 memory. New Outlook, why do you have 2.5GB of RAM? And then look at where New Outlook's rapacious greed got it.

New Outlook is in my mind the exemplar of everything that is wrong with software development today. Everything about it is hubris manifest. This is Microsoft's conceit on prime display. They have taken a product that worked fine and made it do less, eat more resources, and become less helpful in every aspect of the intended things it's supposed to do.

You know that person who will sit there and say, "let's do a rewrite of the code" and know they're only saying that because they don't want to have to learn the old code base? New Outlook is what happens when that person gets their way.

warum ist es eigentlich keiner großen Erwähnung oder gar Warnung wert, wenn sich Microsoft ungefragt Passwörter(!) von externen IMAP-Konten seiner "Kunden" selbst in die US-Cloud kopiert, um die Mails (auch etwa von Ärzten, Anwälten, Lehrern, Kindern, ...) für eigene Zwecke abzurufen und auf eigenen Servern mit "KI" zu durchsuchen und auszuwerten?

New Outlook is pure excrement. It is the software equivalent of the times we live in. Once upon a time things were okay ish. It wasn't milk and honey for sure, but it wasn't bad.

And then it got bad and then accelerated the bad. And now you'd give anything to just go back to even a shitty day from yesteryear.

And if anyone talks about the hubris of mankind, just remember. Someone gave New Outlook the thumbs up and they likely wake up some days happy. If that person was me there would be no degree of self-flagellation that could give me penance.

And then on top of that, someone was so bold to say "hey let's add AI to that." The machines aren't going to overthrow us because we're a threat, it'll be because we made them integrated into New Outlook.

Soon there'll be no more need to code mail templates like it’s 1999. Starting April 2026, Microsoft will begin transitioning from classic Outlook to the new Outlook experience, dropping the ancient MS Word based HTML rendering and replacing it with a normal web engine.

Admins will have the power to opt out (for now), and users can toggle back to classic Outlook - at least until the full cutover, which could be as late as 2029.
