GPS tag helps police catch £12,500 tool thief across Carmarthenshire and Powys

Aston Amos, 35, of Bewdley, and Robbie Bate, 27, of Stourport‑on‑Severn, admitted stealing tools worth more than £12,500 from five vehicles during overnight raids in July.

Raids across two counties leave tradesmen out of work

Dyfed‑Powys Police received reports of break‑ins in Brecon and Builth Wells on 17 July, followed by further thefts in Newcastle Emlyn and Llandysul on 24 July. Court documents show the stolen items included a chainsaw worth around £500, roofing tools valued at £1,500, and other equipment worth thousands of pounds. The damage and loss left several tradesmen unable to work.

Investigators linked the crimes to an Audi A4 seen in each area. Hotel records later showed Bate had checked into accommodation in St Clears using the car’s registration number. Amos, meanwhile, was wearing a GPS monitoring tag at the time. Location data placed him at the scene of each theft. When questioned, he told officers: “You have put me in the area. That’s all you have done, put me in the area,” and even claimed never to have heard of Carmarthenshire.

Police seized the Audi and recovered some of the stolen tools before requesting assistance from West Mercia Police to arrest the pair.

Court hears of past convictions as sentences handed down

At Swansea Crown Court on 14 November, Amos was jailed for nine months, consecutive to a sentence he was already serving. Bate received a nine‑month sentence suspended for two years, along with a 12‑week curfew, 160 hours of unpaid work, and 20 rehabilitation activity days. The court heard Amos had 15 previous convictions for 24 offences, while Bate had eight previous convictions for 22 offences.

Detective Constable Carl Thomas, who led the case, said:

“This was a strong investigation led by North Ceredigion CID with a huge amount of support from a number of departments across the force to apprehend two travelling criminals.

Amos and Bate came into the Dyfed‑Powys area with the aim of targeting vans that might contain valuable tools, working their way through two counties to acquire a vast number of items.

Thankfully we have been able to recoup some of the stolen items for the victims, however these thefts will still have caused a loss of income and inconvenience for those affected.”

Newcastle Emlyn man jailed after Cardigan police chase crash left teens badly hurt

A young driver from Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire, has been sentenced to three years in a young offenders’ institution after a late‑night police pursuit in Cardigan, Ceredigion, ended in a devastating crash.

Zac Thomas, now 19, was 18 at the time of the incident on 21 September 2024. He had been drinking vodka before getting behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo with four teenage passengers.

Police pursuit through Cardigan

Officers on patrol in Cardigan saw the Polo swerving across the road and signalled for it to stop. Instead, Thomas accelerated away, ignoring pleas from his passengers to slow down. He drove at speed along a single‑track lane before leaving the road and ploughing into a field, where the car collided with an earth bank and hedge.

The impact was catastrophic. One passenger was thrown forward with his head smashing through the windscreen, suffering life‑changing injuries including fractured vertebrae, facial trauma and long‑term speech and memory problems. Another passenger sustained a severe leg fracture requiring surgery and skin grafts, while a third needed 23 stitches to a deep head wound. A fourth passenger jumped from the moving car and was found disorientated in the field.

Arrest and charges

Thomas was arrested at the scene after officers smelled alcohol on his breath. A blood test showed he was almost twice the legal drink‑drive limit. He later pleaded guilty to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and to driving with excess alcohol.

At Swansea Crown Court, Judge Catherine Richards told him his use of the car had been “akin to using a deadly weapon” and that his actions had caused “devastation” to his passengers’ lives.

Sentence

Thomas was sentenced to three years’ detention in a young offenders’ institution and disqualified from driving for five years and three months. He will serve up to half of his sentence in custody before being released on licence.

The case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which found Dyfed‑Powys Police officers had acted proportionately and in line with policy.

Carmarthenshire community groups to get up to £3,000 to enhance local green spaces

Carmarthenshire Council say the funding is available to projects located in the county’s principal centres of Carmarthen, Llanelli and Ammanford, as well as and the “Ten Towns” of Cross Hands, Cwmaman, Kidwelly, Laugharne, Llandeilo, Llandovery, Llanybydder, Newcastle Emlyn, St. Clears, and Whitland.

Gwyrddu Sir Gâr is committing £39,000 to support community-led greening initiatives, made possible through funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund with additional support from Carmarthenshire County Council. This scheme is designed to support local communities in developing greener, more resilient, and accessible outdoor spaces that benefit people, place, and nature.

Cllr Carys Jones, Carmarthenshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Planning and Community Cohesion, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local groups to take the lead in improving their outdoor spaces and strengthening community connections. By investing in our natural environment, we are enhancing biodiversity, tackling climate challenges, and creating healthier, more vibrant places for people to enjoy. I encourage all eligible groups within the target areas to apply and be part of this positive change for Carmarthenshire”.

Applications are open until Friday 6th June 2025.

Motorsport community pay tribute to Carmarthen rally co-driver who died in Scottish competition

39-year-old Dai Roberts was competing in the Jim Clark Rally, named after two-time Formula One champion Jim Clark, near Duns in the Scottish Borders.

Police Scotland have said that the driver of the Hyundai i20N Rally2 car, 27-year-old James Williams from Newcastle Emlyn, was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh hospital after suffering serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Superintendent Vincent Fisher of Police Scotland said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

Race organisers have cancelled the remainder of the rally.

A spokesperson for James Williams Rallying said: “It is with a heavy heart, we have to share this sad news.

“The motorsport community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our beloved Dai Roberts.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Roberts family at this difficult time.”

Governing body, Motorsport UK said that it “sends its condolences to Dai’s family and friends, the Jim Clark Rally, Jim Clark Memorial Motor Club and members of the motorsport community.

It added that it has “initiated a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident and will work closely with the Jim Clark Rally event organisers and Jim Clark Memorial Motor Club and will co-operate with the relevant authorities.”

This is the second time tragedy has struck this motorsport family, as Dai’s brother Gareth died competing in a rally in Sicily in June 2012.

Dai himself had a near escape in 2014 after surviving a horrific rallying accident at the Ulster Rally in Northern Ireland, which saw his driver, Timothy Cathcart killed.

Tributes from motorsport colleagues have poured in for the popular co-driver.

Posting on social media, Sambo Collis said: “Can’t believe I’m typing this. The first time I met Dai was on the classic tracks some 20 years ago, he made us feel very welcome competing in South Wales, from then on I was happy to class him as a mate.

“A wicked sense of humour, a fantastic co driver and a lunatic behind the wheel! What rallying has put the poor Roberts family through certainly makes you question things.”

Nick Young added: “Rest in peace Dai, you’re finally reunited with Gareth Roberts, Craig Breen, and Timmy, my thoughts are with your family and friends sir.

“It was a pleasure to know you. James Williams Rallying I wish you a speedy recovery.”

Rally driver, Andy Davies said he was “still struggling to process and acknowledge the reality of this. The world can be so damn cruel.

“Never more than a phone call away, Dai stepped up when I needed it most. He always had the answers. Someone I always had the utmost respect for, and someone I was lucky to call a friend.

“A life lived, a mark left on the world for so many. We all have a story about Dai.

“I’ll look back on the memories, and miss you so very much.”
