“A Song for New Year’s Eve” by William Cullen Bryant
William Cullen Bryant was a 19th century American romanticist poet, abolitionist and civil right advocate. Originally a lawyer, he started publishing poems in the early 1820s. Later in the decade he became the editor of the New York Review and the New York Evening Post, solidifying his position as a prominent man of letters and progressive politics.
William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878)As a writer, he is often brought into connection with the famous Hudson River School of art. What the painters of that school did on their canvases, Bryant did on paper, painting wonderful landscapes and nature scenes with his pen. If you like nature writing, you will love Bryant’s poetry!
In this post, however, I’ll present a poem of his on a holiday theme. Entitled ‘A Song for New Year’s Eve’, this one is a bittersweet parting with the old year, and a hopeful plea for better things coming with the new year. (It’s a bit of a tradition here on Grammaticus to end the year with a poem on a New Year theme – check out the previous one, “Ring Out, Wild Bells” by Lord Alfred Tennyson).
As always, this poetry post contains a simple vocabulary exercise for English language learners.

Shakira enchants Copacabana with a mega free concert: but the event generated a millionaire economic return.
Shakira follows in the footsteps of Madonna and Lady Gaga. The Colombian superstar conquered Copacabana beach with a free concert. A zero-cost operation? Not quite. According to the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, the event attracted approximately 2 million people: so with a minimum investment, a return on investment 40 times greater was generated, estimated at around 777 million reais, or $155 million between tourists, hotels, restaurants, and shops.
The concert follows in the wake of similar shows organized previously by Madonna in 2024 and then by Lady Gaga in 2025, both of which were followed by oceanic crowds ready to dance on the sand. Inserted into the ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’ (“Women Don’t Cry Anymore”) world tour, titled as her 2024 album, the concert began around 11 pm, with more than an hour’s delay, amidst the shouts and applause of fans as drones wrote “I Love Brazil” in the sky.
Among the songs performed were the hits ‘Hips Don’t Lie’, ‘La Tortura’ and ‘La Bicicleta’, up to ‘BZRP Music Sessions #53/66’, born after her separation from Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué. During the show, Shakira celebrated the strength of women: “Women, every time we fall, we get up a little wiser.”
The event, as explained by Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, attracted millions of people from the morning. Free concerts are part of the City’s strategy to stimulate the local economy after Carnival and New Year’s Eve, and before the celebrations of Saint John’s Day in June. As expected, the induced impact was greater than the expenditure, and Airbnb also registered an increase in bookings from Brazil, Latin America, and European cities like Paris and London.
