I always like giving Gibson credit for predicting LLMs in Neuromancer. The way Case interacts with the Dixie Flatline construct correctly outlines the shape of the technology, that it's a fancy personality simulator loaded with memories. Also it's correctly described as a ROM, which transformer weights essentially are.

By the time Case uses it in the first book the technology sounded relatively commonplace. One has to wonder how people in-universe would have reacted when the tech was new.

Blog - #Books in March 2026

TL;DR: 7 books (26 YTD), 2,068 pages (6,817 pages).

Favourite fiction was #Neuromancer by @GreatDismal and Days of Shattered Faith by @aptshadow (which continued to build a fascinating world). Palette cleanse with The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James.

Neuromancer is an old favourite which is better every time, intriguing reading it in #ellecordova's book club as lots of people there had never touched it before.

Americans have forgotten already, in 1-2 generations more or less, just exactly how polluted and dangerous our environment was in the 1970s, until the EPA, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, OSHA, the CPSC, etc, changed everything. This was all done under Nixon, by the way. Although, so was the "war on drugs".

We are headed back to those dark, horrifying days. Those are the days that gave rise to 1980s #cyberpunk and #dystopia fiction, like #BladeRunner and #ChungKuo and #Neuromancer.

@heiseonline gibt auch ein interessantes Buch zu dem Konzept: #Neuromancer von William Gibson. Manchmal denke ich, wenn mehr Menschen #Cyberpunk tatsächlich als #Dystopie auffassen würden, wäre die Welt wahrscheinlich ein deutlich lebenswerterer Ort.
