When I brought my empty stomached and therefore pukey spawn some toast, I saw those toes and and the way the morning light was hitting his shirt… and then won the mother of the year award when I started taking a bunch of pics because I knew I had to paint that moment. (Spawn was fine. We’re both cursed with this stupid phenomenon of getting nauseated and then puking up bile if our stomachs are empty. The only way to make it better is by eating ASAP. My dining room ceiling that I painted 5 years ago. It took 3 weeks to paint the ceiling and another 3 weeks to transform the rest of the room from blah nicotine stained white to black and metallic gold. Avoiding the news today, for obvious reasons. Heard enough this morning. Anyway, this is a baby portrait I did like a year ago (two years ago?), and it was the first time I ever did a baby portrait in any medium… and it’s also when I discovered why so many baby portraits are terrifying. They’re HARD to do when you’re used to painting adults and drawing houses. This was also the first time I painted a verdaccio underpainting and employed glazing for color to my satisfaction. This is the story of Hester Bloodwart, of the Salem Bloodwarts. I knitted Hester for my Halloween spawn. I used a combo of patterns from @dotpebbles_knits for Hester herself, then freehanded the hat, dress & belt, cape, jack-o-lantern, broom, and trick-or-treat bag. Everything but the broom is hand-knit by me. The broom is constructed just like a traditional hand-made broom, but with wire, glue, yarn, and embroidery floss instead of a branch, broom corn, and twine.
